Mrs. Winsome Bluebird has changed this saying to suit herself. she Says "the early bird gets the house." She thinks that much more im- portant because there are plenty of -worms for those who look for them. but houses are quite another matter. They are few and far be. tween. difficult to find however faithfully they are looked for. Many birds suffer from a housing short- age. vilinsomc and Mrs. Winsome had arrived extra early this spring. Th9Y knew that Farmer Bmwnts boy would have several houses ready for his feathered friends. two or three in the Old Orchard, two 01' three around the dooryard. The correct technique was to play the spade four from dummy and win with the king; then to draw trumps (discarding diamonds from dummy; and pass a club into East's hand! With the ace-jack of spades re- maining in dummy. East could not profitably return that suit. and so would have to lead a diamond. De- clarcr would win this with the ace. discarding dummy's spade jack. lead his remaining club to the king. cash the club ace and ruff a club. thus establishing the suit with the spade nice for sure entry.

They want- ed that house but they were too late. Soon there were five blue eggs in that nest. Usually Mrs. Winsome laid four. but this time she laid five. ,

"Four makes a nice family. out we have just the house for a big- izur family this spring and X like a lot of children around," she ex- plained to Winsome.

"It will mean one more mouth to feed." replied Winsome.

"What of it?" retorted Mrs. Win- some. "There always is plenty of food at thk time of year and it little extra work won't hurt either of us."

"There will be one mom to keep watch of and worry about and try to keep out of danger," Winsome pointed out.

”What would you have me do, throw out one of these lovely. precious eggs?” cried Mrs. Win- some in her soft voice.

"Of course not!" replied Winsome lndignantly and went. lo look for the fattest worm he could find especially for her.

Thcy took turns keeping those five cggs -warm. Before some of their neighbors had decided where they were going to huild their nests. bcfore some had Men arriv- ed for the summer, there were five naked. homely. helpless babies in. that nest, for Bluebird babies. like so many other babies of the feath- ered folk. have neither down noi- feathers when they come out of their shells.

I suspect that to you or to me they would all have looked just alike, but I also suspect that to their mother they looked different even then. Now baby Bluebirds, like practically all bird babies. grow fast. In almost no time tightly rolled feathers began to appear all over those babies and then to un- roll. it was then that Mother Win- some began to be troubled. Yes. sir, she began to be troubled. It began with the appearance of the very first feather on one of her darlings. It seemed to her even be- fore it unrolied and opened that it -wasn't right. wasn't what it should be.

Winsome said she imagined this. Fathers often are like that. But Mrs. Winsome was troubled just the same. and more so when more lfeathers appeared.
