Atlantic Salmon StiII Faces Extinction Threat, Is Report

must be made to save it, Vernon E. Johnson said Tuesday

Mr. Johnson IS president of Ca- narlinn International Paper Com- pany and of the Atlantic Salmon Association. Ho spoke at the Rocky Brook Club before a group of high school biology students of the Miramichi Valley and person he] of the federal department of fisheries.

“To preserve this. great natural resource, I believe all men of good will must work together to— wards a common goal," said Mr. Johnson.

“To save the Ahantic salmon we must first find out more about its habits. about that mysterious life cycle which scientists are just beginning to be able to describe in some detail.

“To this end. the federal gov- ernment back in 1950 organized an Atlantic salmon investigation program by helping to facilitate the taking of eggs from earlyarun salmon. to be hatched and‘reared at a government hatchery for sub- ‘sequent release in late - run rivers.”
