FOR FORGING THECKS,

Frank Murphy, of Emyvale, Arrest ed This Morning.

A young man named Frank Marphy, belonging to Emyvale, Lot 30, was this morning arrested at bis father’s house by police-sergeant Bradley, police ofhicer Campbell and Constable William Taylor, on a charge of forgery. The officers left Charicttetown ateleven o’clock last night, and made the arrest at three this morning. They got back to the city about eight o'clock.

When sergeant Bradley made the arrest he said to Murphy,**Do you know what this is for? ?” Murphy’s reply was “I sup- pose so,’’ and upon Bradley offe ring to tell him if be guessed aright he said,” *For Alfred McEachen.”

Murphy was arraigned before police- Magistrate Haszard ai ten o’clock this moraoing,and several witnesses were ex- amined,

The evidence showed that on the 15th Murphy entered the shoe shop of Mr. A. E. McEachen, on Queen Street, and bought a pair of boots and a small vali se. In payment he tendered acheck for $12 made payable to James Murray, and to which the signature of Benj, Heartz was affixed. Mr. McKachen did not wish to cash the check, but did so upon the as~ surance of Murphy that he was the James Murray to whom it was made payable and that be was employed on Mr. Heartz’s tarm,giving the difference between the cost of the goods and the amount of the check in cash. He subsequently diecovered that the check was forgei and reported the matter tothe police.

It was also shown that on the 7th Murphy passed checks on Prowse bros, aud Goff Bros. To both of these checks the name of P. P. Archibald was attached, and each was msde payable to James Macdonald an em;loye of Mr. Archibald. The check cashed by Prowse Bros was tor $12, and he got the mount incash. The check cashed at Goff Bros. wasfor $16 and he got the amouat in ful', less the price ofa pairef boots. Previous to going to Goff Bros. Murphy tried to have the check cashed at Weeks & Co’s., but failed.

Another charge of forgery preferred against Murphy is to be investigated this day week, to which date Murphy has been remanded to jail. This is a charge of passing acheck tor $17 upon W.E. Daw- son, to which the name of M. P. Hogan was attached. Upon this check goods to the value of $< and the balance in cash was obtained.

Mr. McEachen positively identified Murphy ag the man who passed the check upon him. He has also been identified as the person who passed the check at Dawson’s store. Mr. L. E. Prowse said he believed him to be the one who had the check cashed in their store. Mr. Webster could not identify him as the one who cashed the check at Goff Bros.

City Marshal Uameron and Sergeant Bradley deserve credit for the detective ability exhibited in connection with the

case, A few days after the first forgeries were reported to them they had their man located and preparations made for his arrest.

Captain Finalyson, of the steamer Stanley, came to tewn yesterday after oon to see one of his chiliren who has been seriously ill for some time past.

Mr. and Mrs F. Peters and two children crossed from Picton by the Stanl+y yester~ day morning and came through to Char- lettetown by special train ‘o the afternoon. Several other passengers who crossed in the Stanley also came through by the same train. There was 4 large crowd at the station when the train arrived.

‘Lhe members of the Provincial Legisla- ture came to town in force this morning: Hop. Peter Sivclair, Summerfield; Hon. Wim. Campbe!l, Sea View ; Messre. Mc- Willems, West Cape ; Jonn A. McDonald, Lot 16; and Alfred A. Lefurgey, late member for Summerside, came in by the western train; and Hon. D. Gordon Georgetown; Hon. J. H. Cummiskey, (Sp-aker) Fort Angustus; Hon. Anthony McLaughlin, St. Peter’s; Messrs. A.J. McDonald, Georgetown; Cyrus Shaw, New Perth ; James E. McDonald, Car- digan; John Kickbam, Souris; and Murdock McKinnon, Murray Harber came in by the eastern train. Hon. Peter Macs Nutt came in on Saturday afternoon. He was accompanied by Mre. MacNutt, and will remain in Charlottetown while tbe House is in session.

1. Fees be paid to Mies Snellgrove.

2. Reference must be given by persons wanting employment.

Terms for persons wanting emplov- ment:

1. Initiai fee for registering name, o cents.

2. Such name to be retained on books for the period of three months in cases of temporary employmeaut, such as sewing girl, errand boys, lauodresses. &c., with- ent further pay.

3. In cases of employment for more lengthened periods, such as domestic ser- vants, &c., besides the fee of 5 cents, an ad litional payment of 5 per cent. of first month's wages to be paid at the end of the month.

4. Every time one of the class, such as domestic servants, obtains a_ situation through the tureau, the fee isto be re- newed,

Terms for em, loyers:

1. Initial fee, 10 cente, in cases of ob- taining persons for work by the day, such as sewing girls, &c., the name of employe is to be retained on books without further pay for a period of three months.

2. In cases of obtaining servants for more lengthened terms. such as ee servants, 15 cents additional to be paid whea hel» is secured.

3. For every servant of the more per- manent clase, the fees, both icitial and additional amounting to 25 cents to be re- newed.

Losstrer Factory Bernep.—The lobe ster factory owned by Messrs. Cogswell & Easton, at Burnt Point, pear Georgetown, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. This was one of the largest and best equipped lobster factories inthe province and its destruc- tion just at the opening of the fishing seay son will be a heavy lose to the owners.
