the UPEI Student Union is as- sessing the smoking by-laws currently in place on the campus and are mak- ing some hard decisions about them.

The Student Union meeting was buzzing with excitement as people proposed their personal opinions on the subject of on-campus smoking, while also implementing their opin- ions on what they feel should best reflect the student body.

It’s not surprising to see the current policies questioned. Walking across campus, you can find cigarette butts littered throughout the grounds, giving the campus an ugly image. Likewise, smokers are often found in close vicinity of every building, despite the current by-law of smokers being required to stay 15 feet away from any building that’s public.

Student Union President Justin Douglas has witnessed first-hand how little the current policies have affected smokers on campus.

“Many people, including myself, have witnessed our current policy not being enforced and had little faith that this new policy would be enforced,” Douglas said.
