Then the flames took complete possession of the great business establishments and fish warehouses on Water Street, soon ex- tending to the wharves, from which ship- ping had to haul out into the harbor for safety.

At eight o'clock the operators were driven from the telegraph and cable offices by the flsmes, which soon claimed those buildings for their victims. At that hour over five hundred buildings had been des- troyed, including all the principal struc- tures in the city, and the flsmes were spreading in all directions.
