MONTREAL (CP) - A slight firming tendency was noted in late trading but the Montreal and Canadian stock exchanges Friday closed with industrial losses out- numbe ing gains two-to-one. Price changes ranged to a point or more in moderate dealings.

Steels were mixed with Algoma ahead one point and Stelco off '14. Hudson Bay lost IV: and Noranda dropped a point in a soft base metal section. Abitibi added '4 but Bsthur-st B and Powell River werc is-point losers in an easier paper group.

A weak refining oil list showed B.A. and imperial off Ws. Trans Mountain faded 15a in the pipe- lines. Shawinigan retreated W; as Bell Telephone dipped Vs in a quiet utilities group.

NEW YORK (AP!-The stock market staged a gentle decline Friday on the smallest volume in nearly three weeks.

It was the narrowest market since July 2, with only 1,123 issues traded.
