The dowry given by the Duke of Bedford to his daughter on her mar- riage with Sir Edward Malet, on the 19th inst., was $650,000, invested in consols. The London papers have columns of descriptions of the gorgeous ccremony in Westminister Abbey. The ratical newspapers contrast the un- seemly splender of the wedding page- ant with the Duke of Bedford’s constant refusals to subscribe to local charities. They recall the tact that the bulk of his immense income is derived from the rental of rookeries in London slums which are in a sad state of dilapidation. They also recall that during the small- pox scare in London last summer the Duke of §!Bedford refused to clean the pestilential alleys of his property around Covent Garden market, and even refused to allow others to remove the accumulated filth of years. It is said that the only time when his grace shows a lively sense of his duties asa landlord is when some tenant fails to pay his rent, in which case the tenant isevicted with great promptness.

A Good Yield.

The annual report of the inspector of mines of Nova Scotia show

over 16,000 ounces of gold produced in Nova Scotia last. year. The most notjabie returns were from Salmon

River, where 9,799 tons of quartz yield-

ed 3,379 ounces of gold and from (rallagher’s mine at Stormont, where 913 tons yielded 2,212 ounces, At

Oxford mine 1887 ounces of gold were taken out from 2,464 tons of quarts. Several promising districts are reported us being opened out in readiness for this year’s work. The copper, iron, antimony and manganese mies all appear to be making progress. =

Gordon's Diaries.

Gordon's diaries have arrived in Lon-

don. He wished them to be pruned before pubilication. So will Her Mejesty’s Ministers. In the last

letter written by Gordon, this is what he said of Iler Muajesty’s Ministers :— “1 will accept nothing whatever from

(rladstone’s yovernment. I will not even let them pay my expenses. I will

wet the King to pay them. 1 will never put foct in England again, but will (DV. I get out) go to Brussels and so on to the Congo.”
