Dr. Catherine Ryan Professor of Psychology

Some of you may not be familiar with Dr. Cathy Ryan’s name because she is new to U.P.E.I.’s psychology Department.

Dr. Ryan received her Bachelors of Science Degree in biology and psychology form St. Marys University. At Charlton University, she got her Masters Degree and PhD in psychology. After that, Dr. Ryan spent two years at Dalhousie University as a doctoral fellow, where she would do work and demonstrations in the research lab.

While demonstrating in the lab, Dr. Ryan became interested in teaching. She enjoyed the environment and liked to tell the students about the lab research. The students inputs, she thought, gave new ways to look at the topic. Ina few months, when she gets started on her research on the effects of drugs on the development of the brain and behaviour, she will be pleased to hear her psychology students inputs.

This research, that Dr. Ryan is planning, will use animal models. She will examine the effects of alcohol, valium, and anti-hyperactive drugs on these models. She wants to see how prenatal exposure to these drugs willalter brain development and behaviour.

What are Dr. Ryans interest outside of U.P.E.I.? She said that she likes to do the usual things reading, listening to music, and going to the movies. Dr. Ryan also said that she is an amateur squash player, an amateur photographer of different subjects, and an amateur bird watcher.

Finally, to the psychology majors, Dr. Ryan's advises: Work hard, and try to set your goals early, weather or not to do an honours degree or to go to undergraduate school. Also, not to be afraid of talking to professors about how to get into one of these programs.
