As the Dominion Government has lately appointed a Cornission to enquire into the organization of the Civil Service, we wish to direct special attention to this return, especially to the first section of it, as it proves beyond question, that Prince Ed- ward Island, up to the present, has not re- ceived her fair share of the Inside Civil Service patronage.

Withont referring specially te the second section, the return to Parliament, taken as a whole, suggests twe highly important considerations that onght not to be over- looked by the Civil Service Comission. The first is the right of each Province te an equitable share of the inside Civil Service patronage ; and the second is the propriety of encouraging native talent to the exclusion of foreigners. We hold that it is unfair to Canadians to have many of the best offices in the Dominien filled by old countrymen, whose presence here is due perhaps to the influence of some rich relative or influential political friend ‘‘ at home.” Weare, of course, willing to ac- cede equal rights and privileges—in this as well as other matters—to English, Irish and Scotchmen who come here for the pur- pose of making homes for themselves and of helping to build up our common coun try ; but we are not willing that the claims of our native Canadians to positions of trust and emolumeyt should be thrust aside merely for the accommodation of adventur- ers and ‘poor relations’ from the old country. - >> --

In the Italian Chamber of Deputies on Friday, an individual in the gallery set apart for the public, flung two large stones into the hall below, but no one was hurt. The man was immediately arrested. He said he wished harm to the Chamber in general and not tu any Deputy in par- ticular. He refused to give Ins name, and said“ that later on he wonld metives which prompted the acti. again being questioned, the prisoner said his name was Gordegliana ; that he was a tailor at Viterbo; that he had ceme to Rome with the intention of killing a per- sonal enemy or ef committing suicide, but that, being desperate and tormented with hunger, he had done something for which to be arrested in order to obtain food in prison, He also alleged that some time ago he had received a commission te come to Rome to assassinate the King. Active investi- gation into the affair is proceeding. Gor- degliana is twenty-six years of age. It is believed is insane. His pockets were found full of stones. Those he threw fell upon the ministerial bench, upon which several Deputies were sitting. They were flung with great force.

A Destructive Fire. THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS WORTH OF MILL PROPERTY DESTROYED AT CALEDONIA, LOT 61—-NO INSURANCA,

On Thursday evening, June 3rd, as Ken- neth Martin, Esq., of Caledonia, Lot 61, was for a short time sowing grain in a i field, his attention was attracted by smoke rising in the direction of his mills. Fear- ing that the mills might be in danger, he ‘immediately hastened in the direction of the fire. He did not go far before he was convinced that his fears were too well grounded to admit of doubt. He and a number of the neighbors were immediately on the scene; but the fire had already gone so far that it was impossible to arrest the progress of the flames without the mills falling victims to their tury. By the ex- ertions of these who gathered, the mill- dam and almost all the unsawed lumber were saved. The sawed lumber destroyed amounted to about 10,000 feet, consisting chjefly of hardwood and seasoned pine, be sides a large quantity of shingles. There was also a valuable set of carpenter's tools destroyed, besides several pieces of nnused machinery which happened to be in the milis. The saws, consisting of three cir- cular and four up and down saws, were bent and twisted in all shapes, rendering them utterly useless. The heavy iron shaft in the saw mill was bent and almost broken by the weight of the falling timbers. Mr. Martin estimates his loss at about $2,500. There was no insurance on the property. — kK. C. One pound of this makes 7,000 Trey grains, and a very large supply for ene person’s daily consumption is terty or fifty grains, Thus they have imported over 115,000,000 grains aday. Fresh difficulties in Bulgaria are feared. ‘The Panslavist agitation is increasing. The Cologne (azette says: *‘ At a secret meet- ing of the Bulgarian and Roumelian lead- ers at Slivano, on the 29th of May, to agi-_ tate fora union of the twe countries, it was resolved to prepare for active measures. The loan of {£40,000 by a Bulgarian bank to East Reumelia, theugh pretended to be for helping the latter country pay her tribute to the Porte, is believed to be for revolutionary purposes.

On the 29th ult. Edward Hanian waa was seriously ill at his residence on Teronte island. Medical attendance was called upon and, on examining the patient, said he was suffering from a severe illness of bilious fever. He is now slightly better.
