0h ! what are woman‘s tears !

“'hen they arise from fancied wee, The ocean‘s waves—that waste and wide, Bear worthless weeds—in restlets tide

They have their ebb and flow.

Oh I what are woman s tears ! Iffrorn tho f-unt of gentle love- The dew drops ofthe blessed morn. Kiss'd by heiveu's breath as even as born, As meet for re dms above.

0h ! what are woman's tears ! If puur‘d in scam and wounded pride— A torrent from a mountain source. That. pent a moment, reads its course And spreads a rain wide.

Oh ! what are woman’s tears !

If thankful joy the flood compels— That full but like the goalie rain, That blusseth and is blest again,

And fills the sacred we'ls.

0h ! what are woman's tears ! The one soft tear in pity sited—-

Pearl beyond price, the crystal gem

That shines in Marcy’s diadeut, And such as angels shed.

FAMILY AND HUME.

Ihavo seen home in the cot on the sand; heath ; [have seen it intheprince- ly castlu, adorned bythc arts; I have seen it in the burgher’s simple and con- venient dwelling;and in each, where virtue and love united the bonds of family fittercnnrse, there its genius, good and guardian woman, stood watchful and active; I saw. every where the same kindly sights,heard everywhere the some soft. harmonies. Riches and poverty made no difference. Goodness and order, tlit-se,heaven’s serving-spirits upon earth, vall forth everywhere the same peace and the some comfort. No bitter root has leave to grow there. When it would grow comes either a smile or a tear, and with these a kind'word to stifle it. Love watches over the cradle of infancy, over the rest of old age, over thcwell-being and comfort of each in- dividual. In order to be happy, man turns from the life of the world—home. 'i‘he sorrowful heart finds comfort in home, the disquieted, peace; the gay has there his life’s true element. “‘bere do you hear the agreeable joke, which Only excites to satisfy; where those ylutl words full oftcnderness and praises, where that hearty laughter,those cries of sincere enjoyment to which innocence

POVERTY.

Poverty is a great evil in any state of life; but poverty is never felt so se-

The poverty of the poor is misery, but it is endurable misery ; itcau bear the sight of men. The poverty of the for- merly affluent is ttnendurahle; it avoids the light of the day, and shuns the sym- pathy ofthuse who would relieve it ; it preys upon the heart, and corrodes the mind ; it screws up every nerve to such an extremity of tension, that one cool look, the averted eye even ofit casual acquaintanse known in proSperity,suaps the cord at once, and leaves the self-de- spised object ofit a mere wreck of a man.
