EMMET R. McGUIGAN

The death Occurred in the Kings County Memorial Hospital. On November, 14th, 1958 of Emmet R. McGuiIgan, of St. Mary’s Road in his 75th. yr.

The deceased had been in fail- ing health for years, but had taken ill a couple 'of weeks before his death a few day’s previous to his death he entered the Hospital for treatment at first hopes were held for his recovery but God wil- led otherwise, and on the obove mentioned date he passed to his eternal reward fortified in the last rights of his Church, By Rev. Father McCardle.

The late Mr. McGuigan was a man of fine Christian principles he spent the most of his life as a farmer, and carpenter. In his earlier life he spent year’s in the U.S.A. working as a piece worker in a Jewellery store in Attleboro, Mass. U.S.A. He then returned to his native province, and work- ed as a farmer, at middle age he married the late Cecilia McGee of St. Mary’s Road, whom pre- deceased him twenty-five years ago. '

Mr. McGuian took a great in- terest in sports of all kinds par- ticularly card panties, and many will recall my pleasant hours spent with him at home and else where and he Was a loyal suppor- ter of the Progressive Construc- tive Party. He was also a devoted member of the'Roman Catholic Church.

He leaves to mourn his deé p‘ai‘ture one brother Christopher of St. Mary's Road East and also several nieces, and Nephews.

His funeral which was very largely attended was held from the home of his niece. Mrs. Wil- liam Daley Jr. of St. Mary’s Rand On November 17, to St.

PEMBROKE, Ont. (CP) — Cus- toms officers here have seized a model rocket kit as an illegal im- port under the Explosives Act.

The ship last Saturday involved a solid-fuel model of the United States’ Aerobee rocket, the same type that was seized in vancou- ver recently. Officials said then the fuel could “blow your head off.”

The Pembroke rocket was sent to a youngster from a US. ad- dress.

These lines are being written on December 10, and that date brings back *3 mind the days when Prince , Edward Island silver tax was held. in the highest esteem, and a lady having pos- session of a good silver fox neckpiece and muff attracted tremendous attention. $1,000 A PAIR

It was on this date (December 10) 1952 that Arthur Henderson of this province and myself, placed fifty pairs of silver foxes in a new ranch owned by the Chicago Silver-Black Fox Com- pany, 19 miles from ChiCngo. I had received a letter from the president of the company, who was also the head of the Ameri- can Steel and Wire Co., Chicago in June of that year asking for information on silver, fox prices. I took a train to Chicago, met the company. directors, and sold them 50 pairs for $50,000 to be de- livered at their nearest station to the ranch early in December, duty and freight paid.

Accompanied b Arthur Hen» derlon, we left 0' Iarlottertown on December 8. We were held up at Detriot to pay $7,500 in duty. When we arrived at the station nearest the ranch it was early in the morning of DeCemIber 10; our connection to that point was made by a little train that oer- ved some miller places out side Chicago. It was a tremen- dous job lugging the 50 pairs of foxes in the heavy boxes and placing them in the 50 pens, which were 26 feet by 40 feet.- much larger than our pens. The temperature registered 10 above zero and the wind was quite brisk. When we got through, we were very, very tired. .

I caught a trainback to .Chic- ago, and the next morning was on my way home. stopping off at Detriot to cash a cheque. I was told to be very careful. as there were gunmen in the vicin- ity.

The above story is just one of hundreds connected with our silver fox industry, which was then spreading throughout the United States and Canada. We little thought that another 25 years would see its collapse.
