Mr. Edison in his new biography—his “Life and Inventions’”—describes the acci- dental method by which he discovered the
rinciple of the phonograph. There is a find of accident that happens only to a cer- tain kind of man.
“T was singing tothe mouthpiece of a telepbone,” Mr. Edisou says, “when the vibrations of the voice sent the fine steel point into my finger. That set me to think- ing. If I could record the actions of the point and send the point over the same surface afterward, I saw noreason why the thing would not talk.
“I tried the experiment first on a slip of telegraph paper, and I found that the point made an alphabet. I shouted the words ‘Halloe ! Halloo!’ into the mouthpiece, ran the paper back over the steel point, and heard a faint ‘Halioo! Halloo!’ in return.
‘I determined to make a machine that would work accurately, and gave my as- sistants instruction, telling them what I had discovered. They laughed at me. That’s the whole story. The phonograph is the result of the pricking of a finger.”
It is one thing to hit upon an idea, how- ever, and another thing to carry it out to perfection. The machine would talk, but jike many young children it had difficulty with certain sounds—-in the present case with aspirants and sibilants. Mr. Edison’s biographers say, but the statement is some- what exaggerated :
“He has frequently spent from fifteen to twenty hours daily, for six or seven months en a stretch, dinning the word ‘Spezia,’ for example, into the stubborn surface of the wax. ‘Spezia,’ roared the inventor—‘Pezia,’ lisped the phonograph in tones of ladylike reserve, and so on through thousands of graded repetitions, till the desired results were obtained,

A very pleasant little affair was the in- spection of the Bordeaux Claret Company’s cellars by His Honor Lieutenant-Governor Chapleau. The manager has sent out in- vitations to several prominent citizens, who were in attendance to meet His Honor. Among those present were Hon. Peter Mitchell, Mr. Richard White, Lient.-Colonel Hughes, Messrs. Henry Dalby, E. N. St Jean, Q.C., J. P. B. Caserain, J. M. Fortier, Geo. W. Stephens, jr., D. Z. Bessette, A Terroux,S.S. Silverman, ex-Ald. Dufresne, Ald. Préfontaine, Hon. A. Archambault, M.L.C., ete. After the visit of inspection to the cellars had been paid and the different arrangements for bottling, ete., highly com. mented* upon, toasts were in order, A beautiful speech was uttered by the Lieu tenant-Governor, who wished the Company success in their great enterprise. INFORMATION WANTED.
Dear Sir,—What is the matter down home? Our last dates frem there are the 14th March. Last Friday the Conservative conventions were held for West Queen’s and West Prince. This is Thursday, seven days after, and we have not yet heard who has been nominated, or what happened at these meetings. We can get neither mail mor telegram. Messrs. Davies and Welsh’s nomination was wired immediately and was published in al] our papers here, When we are asked what are the Conser vatives doing, and whom they nominated we can only shrug our shoulders and say —we donot know. Questioned further- more, we have to admit that the conven- tions were held a week ago, but that we have not heard. And then our questioners tnrn offon their heel and sneeringly re- mark that the Islanders are a lively, go- ahead, smart people! The Grits are sinart enough to telegraph their news, but our friends, the Conservative, seem to be lack- ing enterprise in this respect. We are languishing here in the meantime, and giving expression to our opinions in lan- guage notoriously inapplicable to the Len- ten seasun,. PuNcH. Ottawa, March 21.

THE STANLEY,
Sir,— Your correspondent “Common Sense” having taken back, water on the Harbor of Charlottetown, also on the freight question, in fact recedes altogther from his first statements in your issue of Monday last, we have no desire to pursue the discussion further than to say that we still hold to our opinion of the easy ac cess of this harbor. ‘Common Sense” re- fers us to the map of Prince Edward Is- land to see the folly of our contention. We were not aware until now that fhe Stanley or any other ship referred to a map of the Island or any other Jand- for their water courses entering or sailing our waters; and we conclude that it’s “Com- mon Sense” that is making a public ex- hibition of himself and proves our first surmise that he is better acquainted with the Quddy roads in the summer than the entering our harbor in the spring. We stated that if the ice was not piled at the mouth of our bay the Stanley can enter here if she can make up the strait. He in contradiction states imagine her caught
inasnow storm and cites her nearly grounding on a former occas- ion. Does she make either George- town or Pictou in @ snow-
storm? No. She has to wait outside un- til it clears. As to Charlottetown being a “winter port,” I never said it was. We were writing for the present time, March 20th, under present circumstances, with no ice in the bay, and with beautiful clear weather, and thirteen hours of sunlight. We trust that the powers that be will not listen to the nervous fears of “Common Sense,” but send the Stanley here and show the country that the boat is equal to the expectations of her builders, even if it does — the crew a little longer on watch. FUNERAL OF DR, CHAISSON’S
MOTHER, There died and was buried at Tignish last week at the advanced age of 85 years, the widow of the late John Chaissor, of Little Tignish, and mother of the Rev. Dr. Chaisson, P. P., of Palmer Road. The venerable lady, who up to a recent date had carried the great load of years as light- ly as many women of the sunny side of fifty,and with that cheerfulness which is so pleasing a characteristic of our Acadian brothers, surrounded by her children, grand-children and great grand-children, peacefully passed away on Wednesday
last. Her funeral took place from the parish church on Friday morning. At nine o’clock the
solemn Requiem Mass was chanted by the Rev. D. M. MeDonald, P. P., who had as deacon and sub-deacon the Revs. F. X. Gallant and A. E. Burke. The church, which was draped as to the altar and sanctuary, in black and white, early filled up with a devout congregation of the friends and relatives of the deceased. Alter- nating with the splendid choir in the organ loft, the chanters at the altar sang the full service through with beautifu! effect. The Rev. Father Chaisson occu- pied a stall in the sanctuary. After the “Libera,” amidst the tolling of the bells of the grand old parish church, the chant- ing ef the beautiful liturgy and sympa- thetic tears of the multitude, ail that was mortal of a good Christian woman was laid by reverent hands in the narrow grave pear the cemetery cross, there to await the resurrection. Our sympathy is extended te her relatives and friends.
