Lone View, Tex., May 23.—This after- noon five robbers entered the First Na- tional Bank of Long View, and ordered the president and cashier to hold up their hands. The robbers secured $2,500. Sev- eral officers and citizens who started to capture the men met the robbers and the latter opened fire, during which George Buckingham and J. W. McQueen were killed and Marshal Muckelroy badly wounded. One of the robbers, a small, dark-complexioned man, was killed. Over four hundred shots were fired. The re- maining robbers escaped with the dead man’s horse and gun.

Grovcesrer, Mass., May 23.—It is pos sible that the curing of mackerel in this city may be hampered by the scanty sup- ply of Liverpool salt, which is used exclu- sively for the trade. There is plenty of the Trapani brand, which is suitable for curing codfish.

Bostrox, May 23.—Vice-Admiral Sir John Hopkins, of the British navy, attend- ed by the British consul, M. Yeats-Brown, and a retinue of flag officers, paid an official visit to Governor Greenhalge at the executive chamber at 3.30 o’clock this afternoon. Governor Greenhalge will re- turn the visit to-morrow afternoon and will be present at a dinner tendered by the Ad- miral in the evening. Friday evening the English officers wil! attend a dinner at the Parker House in behalf of the common- wealth by the Governor. The Blake and Tartar were give a warm reception on their arrival in port to-day.

Paris, May 23.—At a meeting to-day of fifty radical deputies it was resolved that yesterday’s vote in the chamber of deputies indicates the necessity of a radical policy, hostile to any compromise with the rightists and clericals. At a meeting of fifty social- ist deputies it was resolved that as the cabinet had received a rebuff from a majority purely republican and progressist, the socialists were determined only to support those who respected the rights and interests of the working classes, who repudiated any sympathy with clericalism and who were detérmined to reform the finances by taxing capital and big incomes.

Bawvcerort, Conn., May 23.—The local organization of the A. P. A. has stirred up trouble in this city in attempting to prevent Catholic societies of this city from taking pent in the Memorial ~~ The Hibernian Rifles, a strong Catholic society here, asked to be assigned a posi- tion in the parade which is to be helr on Memorial day, but their request has not been considered, and when representatives of the Catholic societies called upon Jas. H. Smith, whois to act as grand marshal, the latter said that the programme had already been completed, and that the Hibernians could not parade. There is much 11l-feeling among the Catholics. ———— me

THE FEET. Walking heats the feet, standing causes them to ewell, and both are tire- some and exhaustive when prolonged. There are various kinds of foot-baths ; authorities differ as to their value. Hot water enlarges the feet by drawing the blood to them; when used they should be rubbed or exercised before attempting to put on a tight boot. Mustard and hot water in the foot-bath will side-track a fever, if taken in time: eure a nervous headache, and induce sleep. Bunions and corns and callousness are nature’s protec- tion against bad shoe leather. ‘Two hot foot-baths a week will remove the cause of much discomfort. A warm bath with an ounce of sea-salt is almost as restful as a nap. Paddle in the water until it cooler, dry with a towel, put on fresh stockings, have a change of shoes, and the woman who was “ready to drop ” will have a very good understanding in ten minutes. The quickest relief from fatigue is to plunge the feet in iee-cold water and keep them immersed until there is @ sensation of warmth. Another tonic for the sole is a handful of alcohol. This is a sure way of drying the feet after being out in the storm. Spirit baths are used by profes- sional dancers, acrobats and pedestrians, to keep the feet in condition. a

Daxvitte, Ill., May 23.—A march to Mission Field was made by the striking miners from this city to-day, and this afternoon nearly one thousand miners were camped around the mines, but were kept at a distance by the deputies. The Hungarians are fresh from service in the European army, and take along a wagon load of rifles. A conflict is expected.

The attention of Commercial Travellers is called to the following sections of an Ast assed by the Legislative Assembly of Prince ward Isiand, Session 1894, intituled “An Act to Impose a Direct Tax on Certain Classes of Traders” :—

1, “ From and after the passing of this Act every casual trader not permanently residing inthis Province doing ness within this Province, commonly known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and avery person not permanent- ly residing in this Province, and who sells either for himself or an other reson any goods, wares or merchandize in this Province, or solicits or canvasses for orders either for kimself or any other rson for the sale, ex- change or purchase “of any goods, wares or merchandize within this Province, either by the production of samples, photographs, cata- logues, printed or written matter, or simply by word of mouth without the production of samples, photographs, catalegues, printed or written matter, shall, before he or she enters upon the business of so selling any goods, wares or merchandize, or soliciting or can- vassing for such orders, pay tothe Provincial Treasurer of this Province an annual licen e fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars,”

“Upon payment of the said license fee or direct tax, the said Provincial Treasurer shall grant a license authorizing the person therein named to sell g 8, wares and mer- chandize in this Province, and to solicit and canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of goods, wares and merchandize within this Provinee. Such license shall be granted and remain in force for the s of one year following the date upon which the said license shall be granted and no longer.”
