peglllllollgh the rush is still on. the activity at the plant is only half ,1-,,.i it was a week ago. At unit time the plant was in oper- ation for twenty hours a day with the men working on two ten hour shifts. The double shift lasted about a month.

Now on the normal run of nine hours a day the men are still wming out plenty of fertilizer. nuianintlc begging and weighing machines were in operation yes- .,,,day afternoon and each of mom was sending out II. bags a minute amounting to 060 bags, or ions, ready for loading in the hour.

Tho materials are taken to the mixer by tractor carriers. After hem,-, pul. through the mixer the mixed product is left in a pile about ten or twelve weeks to un- dergo a final hemical reaction.

A yrnr ago these operations were still a dream in the mind of ihe Company's president, Mr. Austin Scales. on June 11 the men lwgaii tearing down the hangars at the airport which were later transported to the site of the 5,1,... On January 2 this year the plant commenced operations.

This year thousands of'tons lave left the plant by train and 'lilCK. A railway spur. running into the building provides a siding that will enable the simultaneous loading of nine cars indoors. The 'ri.lLi: mlnp provides for the load- tzig oi fire trucks at once.

About 37 men are employed at i:io plant. This number was much iiiglier when the double shift of the past month was in operation. During the night shift only one of tho automatic bagging and arr.-hiiig machines was in use.

Plant manager is Mr. Louis Sadrilcr. Mr. Paul Hanson is the plant foreman.

A man charged with being drunk and incapable was remanded until Monday.

LETTER APPRECIATED -Mr. W. A. O'Brien, Morell. has re- ceived a number of communica- tions expressing warm apprecia- tion of his letter on Mother's Day, which appeared recently in The Guardian. One letter was from a former Islander, Mr. Wil- liam M. Elliott, of Randolph, Mass., who for the past ten years has revisited the Island every summer.

Kinsmen Club Elecls Officers

Mr. A. Freemont Archer (above) was elected President of the char- lottetown Kinsmen club for the year 1951-52 last night as the Kinsmen Club held it's election meeting at the Charlottetown.

Mr. Ian Rankin, was elected first vice president and Dr. Frank Mac- Millan second vice president. The secretary is Mr. Ronald Smith as- sited by Mr. Samuel Robertson who is also Club Historian. Mr. Wallace Higgins was elected treasurer.

New directors appointed were: Messs. Robert Bradley, Joseph shelfoon 'and Stewart Macxay. The new officers will take office in September.

The president Mr. Ivan Sinclair presided over the meeting which was attended by about 30 mem- bers. Up to the minute plans for the Kinsmen annual Sp ing Carn- ival wero reported to t e meeting by the committee Chairman, Mr. Freemont Archer.

A splendid Junior Red Cross meeting was held in the hall at Rochford square school Thursday. May 1'1, at 11 a. m. The president. Miss Mary Mclnnls, presided. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary, Miss Joan Vail, who also read the cor- respondence received. The Trea- surer. Miss Barbara Costello thenl gave her report. It was then moved by Miss Barbara Durant and sec- onded by Miss Gwenlth Arsenault to present the Junior Red Cross representative, Miss Iphigenie Ars- lnault with ten dollars for the Crippled Children's fund. Miss Arsenault expressed her appreciat- ion of the donation.

6-Year-Old S'side Boy Killed in Street Accident

Ralph Richard Williams. six- year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Williams, Granville Street. Summerside, was killed instantly when struck by a truck about 9:45 yesterday morning. The accident happened on Green Street in the vicinity of the High school and from what can be learned it seems that the child had run out on the street into the side of the truck, which was driven by Mr. Jack Small. The vehicle was a half-ton truck owned by Corney Bros.

The accident happened near the home of Coroner Dr. Austin De- laney and he rushed out but the 50V was dead when he reached him. A coroner's jury was em- panolled and after viewing the

body adjourned till five o'clock this afternoon. I Jury member are: Messrs.

Cleve Whalen, foreman; Jim Har- ris, Sidney Forbes, Willard Dou- cette, Earl Campbell, James lio- gan and Roland sheen.

The accident occurred before the school patrol came on duty. This patrol operates at times when children congregate near the school and endeavors to pre- vent ihcm from crossing sti-ects when traffic is approaching.-S.

Will Preside Al Kinsmen Meeting

Mr. A. Walthen Gaudet, Kins- men Governor of District No. 7, which comprises the four Atlantic provinces, will preside at the special Council meeting of Dis- trict No. 7 which will be held at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel, Fred- ericton on May 24-25-26.

The special Council meeting is being held in place of the annual meeting oil the District. The usual annual convention will be fore- Xone on account of the National meeting of the Association which will be held in the District of Halifax on August 20, 21. 22.

Six candidates Receive 3rd Degree At l.0.0.F. Meeting

Last Friday night. at the regu- lar weekly meeting of Wildey Lodge, No. 27. I. O. 0. F.. the fol- lowing brothers received the Third Degree. known as the Degree of Truth in an impressive and digni- fied ceremony: Brothers Stanley Godfrey, Raymond Livingstone. Collins Wood, Leonard Wood. Jos- eph Nicholson, and Paul Hansen.

The degree was under the cap- able and efficient direction of De- gree Master, Past Grand Master Bro. A. 0. F. Gill. and the music was in keeping with the occasion. the pianist being Bro. Percy G. Acorn.

Considerable business of a rout- ine nature was satisfactorily dis- posed of. '

Bro. C. D. Locman, D.D.G.M. of District No. 12, announced that there would be a District meeting at Regal Lodge. Alberton, on May 30th. to be followed by a social evening. The lucky door prize. donated by Bro. William Warren, was won by Bro. George Newman.

Appointment of Wiuiam Arch- ibald Mackintosh. C.M.G., M.A.,

Ph.d.. Ll.D.. F.R.B.C., (above). as- principal and vice-chancellor of Queen's University, effective Sep- tember I, has been announced by J. M. Macdonnell. chairman of the University Board of Trustees. The announcement is a birthday gift for Dr. Mackintosh for he was 56 on May 21. '

VHe succeeds Dr, R.c. wnnncc, since 1936 Queen's distinguished principal and vice-chancellor, and senior university head in Canada, who reaches the retiring age of 70 years this summer.

Dr. Mackintosh has been widely recognized as an outstanding economist. educator and adminis- trator. He has been with Queen's for 39 years as student, instructor and senior officer, and is known and beloved by a host of graduates and undergraduates. He is the first Queen's graduate to hold the post or principal. Born at Madoc, Ont., north of Belleville, in 1895, he is the son of a pioneer Ontario edu- czitor, Inspector William Mackin- tosh, and the youngest child in a family of seven.

During the early part of the de- pression Dr. Mackintosh made one of his great contributions to the Canadian econbmy when under the sponsorship of the American Geo- graphical Soclcty he directed and coordinated a. vast research pro- jcci: on the Prairie Provinces. In this nine-volume study, economists, historians, sociologists, geologists and geographers worked together under his guiding hand to produce a Canadian classic.

Though he has never been a per- manent civil servant, Dr. Mackin- tosh from the outset of his career has worked for successive federal administrations. He was associated with the late Arthur Purvis on the National Employment Commission and played a part in the work of the Roweli sirois Commission.

He was special assistant to the deputy minister of finance from 1939 to 1944 under Rt. Hon. J.L. Ilsley. From 1944 to 1946 he was director general of economic re- search. Department of Recon- struction and Supply. headed W Rt. Hon. C.D. I-Iowe. For several month in 1947 he was acting deputy minister of finance when Dr. W.C. Clark was ill. He was also phead 01 various delegations including the Canadian technical delegation at Bretton Woods conference. and he served on numerous delegations to Washington, London and the Un- lied Nations.
