OTTAWA iCP) — A lone pink salmon which returned to birthplace in Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula this year to spawn has raised a faint glim~ mer of hope for a resurgence of salmon fishing on the Atlantic coast.

The fish was the only known survivor from an experimental planting of several thousand pink salmon eggs tWo years ago. They were placed in a New- foundland stream 3,000 miles from their native waters on the Pacific coast of British Colum-

Late this month 3.000.000 fer- tilized pink salmon eggs will be flown from BC. for a second experimental planting in the same region. It will be another two years before results are known.

Although he doesn't. match the famed Atlantic salmon as the delight of sports fishermen and gourmets, the pink could be- come a valuable fishery asset to the atlantlc region it species can be successfully es- tablished.

CATCH DWINDLING

The catch of Atlantic salmon has been dwindling in recent years and there is wide concern over the situation. Intensive studies are being made to solve the complex problems of proper management.

Scientists of the fisheries re- search board admit they have “hope” for the success of the B.C. pink in eastern waters but caution that it is too soon for enthusiasm.

“It's much too early for any- one to get excited over this ex- periment." Dr. . C. Stevenson, a special assistant to the board. said Wednesday.

"The one fish known to have returned from the first small planting of eggs is not muc evidence to go on," he added.
