‘*The Blue Castle’’, A show for all the family

Theatre Prince Edward Island has announced its upcoming production of THE BLUE CASTLE, a musical play Hank Stinson based on the well- known story by L.M. Montgomery. The show is directed by Ron Irving and will be staged at Theatre Le Carrefour in Charlottetown, May 10-15, 1993.

Hank Stinson is an actor, musician and play- wright familiar to many from his long-term involvement in the Island theatre and musical scene, including the Charlottetown festival and past Theatre P.E.I. productions. THE BLUE CASTLE won first prize in Theatre P.E.I.’s New Voices Playwriting Competition in 1992, and was workshopped last summer at the Muskoka Festival writer’s colony under the direction of Douglas Campbell.

THE BLUE CASTLE will feature Glynis Ranney in the leading role, supported by a cast of local Island performers. Glynis, who has played Anne of Green Gables at the Charlottetown Festival for the past two seasons, will be performing this summer at the Stratford Festival.

strumental axis -- guitarist/multi- instrumental- ist Colin Cripps, drummer Ambrose Pottie and bassist Darren Watson -- consistently main- tains an artful balance of rock intensity and subtle understatement.

The foursome recorded nine of Stone’s ten tracks with renowned English producer John Porter(Smiths, Bryan Ferry, Miracle Legion);

one of those, ‘‘Nothing Ever Happened’’, fea- _

tures an inventive mix by American garage- rock godhead Butch Vig. The remaining tune, “‘One Way Conversation’-- the album’s only non-original, written by Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner-- was self produced by the band, with Pirner contributing backing vocals. Also ap- pearing on the album in supporting roles are legendary Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan and frequent Robbie Robertson\ Daniel Lanois col- laborator Bill Dillon, who contributes guitar and pedal steel.

The promise of the band’s debut is borne out’ in spades on STONE, whose effortless perform- ances bespeak the experience gained from the rigors of extensive roadwork. “‘If it comes: down to any one thing,’’says Cripps ‘‘it’s that we got a lot louder. There’s a special chemistry that comes out of playing together a lot, and! think you can hear that on this album.”’
