Once at least, the horrible tale of an unfortunate—refused admittance, owing to the supposed nature of his disease, into any privale family —dying b-bind a bern, came to the writer’s ear! [n- stances also are not uncommon of sick stran- gers, without a cent in their pocket, apply- ing for admission into the Marine or Quarar tine Hospital but who are not eligible. With ‘what complacency then, can we sitin our pews and hear the words read,—* for | was an hungred and ye gave me no meat; | was thirsty and ye gave me no drink; I wasa uiranger and ye look me notin; naked and ye clothed me not; sick and in prison and ye visited me not.’ Surely, Mr. Editor, Hos- pitals are no less the oulgrowth of th: teach ings of flim who went about doing good, than are Young Men's Christian Associa- tions. For the latter object we have provid- ed, properly enough, @ splendid brick build- ing, butmoteven & wooden shed for a gener- al Hospital. Will the people who erected the one refuse to provide the other? [am sure, Mr. Editor, you were glad to see thata Con- cert tdok place last week to raise money for Hospital purposes. My object in writing you now is to draw your attention, anu that ol ’ other Journalists favorable to the movement to this matter, and to ask you to discuss it and advocats its necessity, in the columns of your paper. Wright, Eeq., of Bedeque. A young bull calf, the property of ffon, J. C. Pope, was also sold by Mr, MeNaill, realizing $10: purchaser, Charles Bernard, Esq., of New London. Such sales as these should encourage stockraisers. People are beg*n- ning to find that there is money in good stock. and we have little doubt that the young cattle to be sold at Georgetown on Mhursday will realize handsome prices.

legislation of last session “ obnoxious.” At Crapaud the spacious hall was crowded on Monday night. John Currie, Esq., pre- sided over the meeting, and A. Campbell, Esq., acted as Secretary. Stewart, Balders ston. H. Lawson, A. B. McKenzie, Mathew- son and Lea pleaded with all their ability, and kept up the discussion for seven long hours, or until one o’clock on Tuesday morning—but in vain. The speeches of Sullivan, Campbell, Bowers, D. W. Palmer, T. W. ffowatt, George Howatt and Mcg Quarrie were strong against the bungling of our incapable Government; and the eomantry of Crapaud were inexorable. The following resolution, moved by D. W Palmer, Esq., and seconded by Isaac ! rowsdale, Exq., passed by an overwhelm ing majority :-—
Whereas, The Legislature at its last sitting passed an obnoxious Assessment Act, which imposes unfair and unjust tax- etion upon the people without their con- sent: and from said Assessment Act the [Incorporated ‘fowns are unjustly exempt ed, and—
WAeveas, The Government has created a large number of new and unnecessary ofifee-holders with large salaries, and in- creased the pays of some of the old offi- cials, thereby largely increasing the ex- penditure of the Province.
Therefore, Resolved, That in the opinion of this meeting the Assessment Act is uns
just and unnecessary, and not adapted to the wants and circumstances of the peo-
ple of this Province, and that the Lieut.
| Governor be requested to call the Legis-
lature together to amend the said Act.

The section between Hilis- borough Street and the Railway Station has been very well graded; and the work of putting on the stone was commenced yes» terday morning. Judging by the progress already made, we think there is a fair pros- pect that the macadamization of Water Street will be completed this fall. Mr. Douglass bas two large gangs of men busily employed—one in hauling clay and grad~- ing; the other in hauling stone and put- ting it down. ‘The civic authorities and Mr. Douglass evidently mean business, and the citizens are pleased to see that their money is being well exs pended. Apropos of this subject the lays ing of a plankway on Water Street—from Prince Street east—should not be over- looked.

One firm sold to another on credit a cer- tain amount of goods in bond. A portion of those goods were sold by the buyers, the rest of them remaining in bond, when those buyers become solvent, Thereupon the first firm mentioned instituted 4 suit for the récovery of the quantity still in bond, claiming that the fact that this quantity remained in bond, was proof that the passage of these goods from the sellers to the buyers had not been completed, and that consequent« ly the right of ownership still vested in the sellers.

Tae Halifax Herald remarks that Mr. Huntington, at the Brompton picnic, said Sir John had run away from the verdict of the House in 1873, by resigning, instead of facing a vote. Mr. Huntington knows pretty well that Sir John did wisely; but Mr, Huntington did not tell the people of Brompton about the man (Lucius Seth Huntington) who, after getting stolen cor« respondence and other felonious and dis- graceful matter into his possession, and after making a whole set of vile charges, fled away from the subpoena of the Com- mission and did not dare to “prove” his charges—because he would have had to perjure himself.
Mme. Cora’s Enterrainwent in the Mar- ) ket Hall last evening was in every respect worthy of the patronage of our citizens. We regret that the fair prestidigitator was not greeted by a better house on this, her first, appearance amongst us. However, those who were present were amply recom- pensed for their time and outlay. The ‘sleight of hand” tricks, many of which were new, were performed with amazing vivacity and dexterity, and completely ) threw the efforts of all former “ magicians’’ that have performed here into the shade. The supernatural vision or second sight fairly astounded the audience, Miss Wren, blindfolded and her head enveloped in 8 shawl, correctly described every article presented to Mme. Cora, who stood among the audience and at a distance of at least thirty feet. Not only could she describe the nationality of a piece of money (bor- rowed from one of the audience) but its value and the date of its issue, but she also correctly deciphered the initials en-~ graven on a ring, ete. The ‘‘Couch of the Angels’? was splendidly rendered and the following characters: ‘Little Red Riding Hood, ‘ Prayer,’ ‘Gypsey Girl,’ ‘Mercury,’ ‘ Britannia,’ ‘Erin,’ ‘Scotland,’ ‘Goddess of Liberty and ‘Amazon’ were ‘very tastefully and vividly represented,
