Navan Base.—The naval au- thorities have decided that Guam strateg ically is of scarcely less vaiue than Hawaii, and have begun the preparations of plans to make it one of the moat important naval bases in the Pacific. The project~ ed improvements will involve an expendi- ture of several millions for a breakwater at Port San Luis D’Apra, a cosling wharf and repair shops and shore batteries for protection against assault, says a Wash- ington despatch.

Axotser New Biock.—A project is on foot for the erection of a four story brick or stone block on the corner of Queen and Grafton streets, to extend to the Mur- ray property on ‘Grafton street and io the northern end of the building at present occupied by Mr.S. A pleasing feature of last evening’s meeting was the presenta- tion by the ladies of a new set of officers regalins to the Division.
