Men's Basketball Split Weekend Tilt

After splitting games with the UCCB Capers this week- end the men's basketball panthers find themselves look up at St. FX and UCCB in the Atlantic Conference standings. The pan- thers currently sit tied with UNB for third spot with one game in hand.

On Saturday, the boys hosted the Capers of UCCB after raising their AUS banner from last year. The game didn't go according to plan as the panthers were unable to get on a roll offensively. However, they were able to squeak out a 60-53 victory through with hard defensive hustle and by capi- talizing on key rebounding oppor- tunities.

Mike Kierstead had an instrumental impact on this game as he pulled down 14 rebounds to compliment his 5 steal and 7 points. Also scoring for the pan- - thers were Sherone Edwards and Kenny Duncan with 12 points a piece, and Jeff Walker with a game high 15 points.

Sunday was much of the same lack of offence for the panthers but unfortunately this effort wasn't enough to sweep the series. The panthers dropped their Sunday game to the Capers by a final score of 68-66. The win for the Capers bumped their record to 4-2 while our panthers record fell to 3-2.

The guys are still in good shape and with nothing to panic over, the boys will have to pick up their play after the xmas break if they wish to get a first round bye into the play- offs. And you can be sure the pan- thers will be looking for revenge on the Capers as they will clash

heads again on the 17th and 18th of January in Cape Breton.

Women's Basketball Drop

Two Against UCCB UCCB showed why

they are on top of the Nelson Division in the Atlantic Conference with their two victories against the panthers this past weekend. On Saturday, the Panthers dropped their home opener to the Capers 74-66. After sitting behind the eight ball from the get go, with an opening 21-5 run, the panthers set- tled down and made a game of it. The lady panthers were able to claw back at halftime only to trail by three 37-34. The girls gave it a valiant effort but were unable to

contain the 50% field goal percent-

age by the women Capers in the second half.

Scoring for the panthers was Katherine Walters with 16 and Melissa Campbell who showed

why she has to be considered an early season favourite for the AUS rookie of the year honours as she poured in a game-high 21 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. On Sunday, they went at it again as both teams brought their offensive games, or perhaps forgot their defensive ones as the final score rounded out to 92-80, in favour of UCCB. The girls shot well, but were outmatched by UCCB. Anytime you can score 80 points in a varsity basketball game you put your team in a position to win. You can be sure these girls will come out firing after the — Christmas break and make some noise in the Atlantic Division.

into Moncton's arena had no effect on the panthers what so ever. They were able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead after one, and extended it to 3-0 as they headed into the third. John Kozoriz scored twice for the Panthers while Kris MacPhee and Darcy Harris also pitched in with goals. Adding the helpers were Adam Rivet, John Brioux and Chris Moher.

On Sunday, the men went head to head with STU in Charlottetown. Although the out- come was a 2-2 draw, and the Tommies scored with approximate- ly three minutes to go in the third, the panthers played an all around solid game. Scoring for the pan- thers was Kowalski from Sinacori and Moher, and Dalliday knotched a beauty for the game tying goal.Kowalski, for his goal, skated in over the blueline, flanked by two Tommie defenders and unleashed a wrist shot over the goalies glove, and into the top cor- ner.

So far this season, pan- thers right winger Darcy Harris has snagged 4 goals this season, but what is more impressive is his accumulation of 56 penalty min- utes in only 9 games. Harris is a leader for the panthers in the dress- ing room and on the ice and the rest of the panthers will be looking to their captain after the holidays to lead them into the playoffs.
