The machine drew into itself the blood coming to his right aurlcle, the upper right chamber of the heart. Normally, this blood flows down into the left ventricle, then the ventricle pulses it through tthe pulmonary artery into the lungs for a new supply of oxygen.

Instead, the machine pumped the blood into the pulmonary artery, at some distance from the ventricle. Chuck's rigfnt auricle and right ventricles were kept free of blood, the ventricle pulsing as usual, with no work to do.

Then the surgeons opened C'nuck's pulmonary artery, itt the point where it comes from the ventricle.

That was where Chuck's trouble was, a. bad valve at the ventricle. His heart, pumping hard to force blood througih the valve. had en- larged to "twice its normal size.

Today, Chuck's heart is back to normal size, and he has every pros- pect of living a normal life,

U.S. Govit Indicates No China Blockade Planned

WASHINGTON, (AP) Oom- munist China received s200,000,000 worth of goods from non-Commun- st countries in the first nine months ..of 1952. It received sev- eral times that much from the Sov- iet bloc.

Statistics like that lie behind the demands for 9. blockade of Red China's coast. The figures have been furnished to the United States government by the coun- tries involved.

No Blockade Now

Some U. S. congressional leaders demand :1 blockade. The Eisq1how- er a.drn.inisiarat.lon, however. has in- dicated that it. is planning no blockade at this time. Iihere have been reports it is considering pro- posing to Allied countries that all shipments to China be embargoed -that is, forbidden by law.

North Atlantic Treaty Organiza- tion nations and practically all other non-Communist powers long ago envbargoed the shipment to China of arnls, ammunition, atomic energy materials and other .strs.- tcglc supplies.

Yet most western powers have continued to maintain some kind of commerce with China. In the first 10 months of 1952 more than 000 ships. arrived from the non- Communist world at Chinese ports -comlpared with 250 from the Soviet bloc.

What proportion of the Soviet cargoes constituted war materials is not revealed. But there are rea- sons to believe Russia logically would olf to send the bulk of its war supplies to China by rail- road rather than by water.

Most Imports By Land

British sources estimate that '15 per cent of China's imports come by land. and large-scale shipments could come by land only from Russia. '

Also, Russian snipe would have to stop at several ports on the trip from the Black Sea or the Baltic through the Suez. canal to China. And by international law a ship must report its cargo at each port. Russia would not want the free world to learn in that way of its aid to China.

More than half the s200.000,000 worth of goods that the free world sent into China between January and September last year was-cot- ton. Pakistan sent almost 395,- 000,000 worth of it and Egypt about s9,ooo,ooo. ,

About 315,000,000 worth of rub- ber came from Ceylon. '

other major items included ray- on and wool yarn from Italy. dry salted herring from Canada, chem- icals from Britain, watches from Switzerland and paper products from Hong Kong.

The U. S. has embargoed all trade and financial transactions with China, since 1051.
