THE POLISH EXILE.

Forced from home: desert lands, From wife and children dear, 'i‘o roam along Siberia’s sands And forests dark and drear; Mid rocks with horror deep imbued, Where music wakes not solitude.

The impulse of the exilels soul Pervades the bowling wind:

Hie country’s wrongs in visions roll Across his tortured mind:

For her slain sons he fsin would weep.

But tears of anguish spring too deep.

Hie fancy hears the clarion’s sound That celled him to the field, And haunts the blood-stained bgttle ground, Where Poland’s fate wee sealed; Where freedom‘s sword was lifted high, To foil the strength of tyranny.

Oppression’s power may chain His form in bondage down;

But freedom in hie heart can reign, And wear her golden crown,

Until the chainless spirit flies

PROPANITY.

What is there more disgusting to the virtuous men, to the tnan of refined sen- sibility, than profanity! Although there are many who style themselves gentle- men.that allow themselves to indulge in this odious practice, yet it does not prove that. those persons who indulge in it are gentlemen—but the reverse.— Whenever we hear a men dealing out hie oaths at every breath, and calling down the vengeance of Heaven upon him in the shape of some horrid im- precation, we may conclude that he is far gone in the road to ruin ; end, that unlesshe soon breaks away from his sinful course, he may be taken at his word, and hurried into eternity with a curse upon his lips. He may be clad in his robes offine linen, but his apparel will not take away the stain which is aflixed to him by using profane lan- guage. Is hea father? think for one moment ofthe example he is setting be- tore his children ! catching every word which falls front his lips, they soon be- gin to lisp forth amid their childish prat- tle the horrid oath; the passing travel- ler bears amid their sports the boister- ous laugh mixed with the profanation of God's holy name. ,it isa vulgar habit also, for in its train follow low and ob- scene jests, such as would make the ears of a virtuous person tingle; how of- ten is our decency shocked by the low ribaldry mixed with profanity, which meets our ears in passing through the streets. In this enlightened age such a state of things should not be. Those habits which tend to demoralize our cha- ractere should be carefully guarded a- gainst. and'every precaution taken, that the rising generation may grow up a virtuous and refined people. Let the ladies of the land do what they can for the suppression of this vice; let them de- ber from their society every young man from wltoee‘lips fell profane language; let this be done in every case, and soon a blow will be given to this. vice that will cause it to tremble from its very found- ation. The influence of woman is great; and upon whatever benevolent object it

is turned, it acts with a force not to he withstood. Daughters of Amerite come

A Paorrraau. \Vtra. -A clergy- man in one of our large cities havmg married a couple who were strangers. found on opening a piece of brown paper, which was enclosed in the certificate. one bright cent. A few months after, while walking in the street, a stranger accosted him with the question “Do you know me sir?” “i do not,” was the reply.—“Do not ! why, sir you married me.” “Quite probable,” replied the clergyman— ‘butl so frefuently marry strangers, that it is difficult afterwards, always to recognize them.” “One circum- stance}? said the stranger, "which i will relate, will, I doubt not bring me to your recollection; do you not re- member of finding a bright cent in a certificate which was handed you be- fore marrying a couple?" "I do.” said the minister. “l was the man! When I was married, lknew not whether my wife would be of any value. Afterl was married, i took lodgings, and soon after went to sea, leaving my wife upon half-pay.
