PHILADELPHIA. Oct. 18 -- (AP) Connie Mack. baseball's "grand old man." resigned today after 50 years as manager of Philadelphia Ath- ietica.
And into his shoes as manager stepped Jimmy Dykes. 54, star third baseman oi the Athletics when Connie Mack's team dominated the baseball picture two decades ago.
At the same time, Art Ehlers. 52. director. cf, the American League club's farm system; was elevated to the position of general manager.
Although the lanky 87-year-olcl leader of the Athletics had been under fire for some time by sports fans as having outlived his useful- ness. his resignation came as a sur- prise. The announcement was made at 3 press oonference.
"I am retiring from the active management of the baseball club but will remain as a director." Mr. Mack said. -
Actually, he'll retain the office of president with his oldest son. Roy. vice-president. and another son. Earle. secretary-treasurer.

It is quite apparent that our purses in the coming year will be still greater. More interest was shown this year by our colt breeders than ever before. This is evidenced by the fact-that we had eighty-three nominations. the largest number in our history. In our two-year- old trot and pace we had twenty- three nominations, eighteen paid the second payment. and thirteen the starting fee. Four trotiers and eight pacers started. The purse was S300.00 and Trophy for the trot, and s40il.00 and trophy for the pace. The three-year-old trot had twelve nominations, twelve paid the second payment, five paid the starting fee and five started. The purse was 5440.00 and trophy.

LONDON. Oct. 18 -(AP)-Ram dolph Turpin won the British middleweight championship Tues- day by knocking out defending tltleholder Albert Finch in 1:02 of the fifth round of a scheduled 15- round bout; Turpin weighed 158. Finch 159 1-2.
Turpin thus avenged the defeat of his brother Dick. who lost the 160-pound crown "to Finch last spring.
