This siatement of the Star is absolutely true. Our farmers, taxpayers, those who are compelled to bear the chief portion of the public burden, are disappointed and mortified by the failure of the Liberals to make good their pledges to economise, and by their practical enlargement of the public expenditures. It now appeare that the Conservatives were either pot extra vagant stall, and that the people were deliberately misled aod deceived in that regard, or that the Liberals are out-Herod- ing Herod in respect to extravagance and corruption. In either case the conduct of the Liberal leaders is to be condemned. Whichever horn of the dillema_ they may choose, they must appear in a bad ig bt before the public.

The scenes and conditions here des-

cribed are not creditable to the justice of France. It appearsthat a deliberate attempt is being made to prevent a ful! examination of the case.

—It is reported that Mr. Caegrain will endeavor to pitdge the Hone of Commons to the advisability of a readjustment and revieion of judicial salaries.

—The Merchants’ Bank of Halifax a- its annual meeting decided to ask permis sion of the Government to increase its capita’ stock by five hundred thousand dojlars, making a total of two millione. This is in Jine with a similar increase by the Bank of Nova Scotia some months ago.
