The natural tendency in bridge

is to win a trick wh the oppor- tunity presents itself. With ex- perience comes the knowledge that in many situations it is far better to refuse to win a trick in a given situation than it is to take it.

When to take a trick. and when not to, is a subject that is not easy to generalize. Perhaps the broadest generalization than can 'be made is to take a trick unless there is a good reason not to. This [advice may not be helpful, since it involves the exercise of good judgment rather than following a
