THE TURF,

UPTON PARK RACEBES-—-SECOND DAY,

Great interest centred around yester- day's racing at Upton from the fact that the Stallion Race for a gold medal, and the championship of the Island was to take place. At one o’clock—notwithstanding | the unpromising appearance of the day—

Park, some on foot and others in all sorts ef vehicles. Among those present we noticed the Hon. J. C. Pope, Hon. A. A. MeDonald, Charies Palmer, Esq., Malcolm McLeod, Esq , Finlay MoNeill, Esq.

All tke horses in the Stallion Race seemed in fine form, and esch owner and driver pleased with the action of his horse. The track was in good con- dition; Lhe Judges, who were the same as on the previous day, rang up the Stallions for the first heat at a quarter past 2 o'clock.

The above entries appeared on the track and positions were drawn ”ith Jeff at the pole, Messenger second, Harry third and Messenger Boy fourth,

First Heat.—Some difficulty was exs perienced in starting, as Harry could not be held back to score. On tie sixth ate tempt they tried to score by him and got away, with Jeff leading, Messenger Boy second, -Harry and Messenger well up inthe rear. At the quarter pole Harry collared Messenger Boy, gave him the go-by in good style, and quartered Jeft at the half-mile pole; he keeping in that position sent Jeff along fast. Mesgenger Boy passed the half-mile pole on ‘a hop, accompapiel by Messengery. ‘Phe first named came down to the thing at the turn and gaye chase to » making the trotting down the back stretch some. what hot. Nearing the uarter pole lisrry closely ane Jeft, but unfortu- nately went off his feet. He, however, fiaally squared himself, and gave Jeft a lively chase down the home stretch, passing under the wire in close quarters, with him.

Second Heat.—The horses came up for this heat looking very fine, They got a splendid send off. At the third attempt Harry was ona leap. Jeft again took the lead, and showed a good deal of daylight between Harry and M at quarter pole, They, at t markable efforts to overhaul Jeff, but went off their feet several times before reaching the half-mile pole, which Jeff about eight lengths ahead of Harry and Messen- ger Boy, about the same distance in Harry's rear, At the turn Harry came down to the fine work—but Messenger Boy continually kept off his feet—and started in pursuit of Jett down the back and on the hume stretch. He gradually gained, and was but @ short distance behind when Jeff passed under the wire. Mesvenger Boy breaking @t the turn on the home stretch was dis- fanced.

Third Heat.—When the horses got the word go, Harry was, as before, on the leap but as he was, succeeded in taking the pole from Jeff, leading the waya length. Jett Kept closely in pursuit, and passed the

f-mile pole with his nose at Harry’s wheel, and kept that position down the back stretch. Nearing the three quarter pole Harry went in the air, and came down finely, with Jeft athis side. It was now “anybody’s”' heat, the horses rounding the turn abreast, and down the home stretch at a very lively gait. At the dis- tance post the whip was applied to Jeft with good effect, causing him to spurt and keep Harry at his wheel on passing the wire.

Royal Harry had only been a few days in training; and was in no condition to trot. He was merely put into add to the in- terest of the race,

The above entries appeared at the wire, and got the word “go.” At the start Belle led, followed by Maid, Girl and

she (Girl) bolted off the track. Maid maintained the lead till passing the quar’ ter-pole; but received the gosby from Tartan, Belle having bolted on the green. At the finish Tartan was first followed by Belle, Maid and Jennie, with Girl at a dis. tance. This heat, as well as the first, hav- ing been taken by Tartan, the race was therefore ended.

Our loss was 20 offic cers and 400 men placed hors de combat, and that of the enemy at least 1000 men. Uur cavalry on the road leading to Plevna and Sona have made two reconaissences to learn the strength cf the Turkish relief troops. On the 20th, Adjutant Count Stackelberg dispersed three Turkieh squad~ rons near Raschita, but withdrew ae infan- try were seen coming up in the rear, Our loss was five men killed and two officers and eleven men wounded. It is stated that repeated orders have one from the Porte that Gesshofts be rought to Constantinople, but it is feared

that the military authorities will not obey and that he will be executed. Despatches from Athens give the idea of serious trouble brewing between Turkey and Greece. The Porte requested the French Government, as & guaranteeing power, to advise Greece to abstain from hostile attitude. Shortly before noon tovday a fire broke out in the upper stories of the Interior De- partment building, and spread rapidly. it originated in the storeroom for models, All the engines in the district responded, but for a time the efforts of the firemen seemed unavailing. Engines came from Baltimore and Alexandria, and at 3 p. m. the tire was under control, having been confined to two upper stories of the north wing. Loss will be $300,000 to $400,000 _
