This letter is to invite you to join the UPEI Catholic Students’ Society. Who are we, you might ask? Well, contrary to popular knowledge, we are nota bunch of ‘‘religious fanatics’’ who spend all of out time on our knees. Like you, we are real, live UPEI students from different faculties with varied interests and from different backgrounds. But what we are isa group of students who come together to share our faith and our gifts with each other to support one another and to build a stronger Christian community. The UPEI Catholic Students’ Society also belongs to organizations on the national and international levels -- the Canadian Catholic Students’ Association and the International Movement of Catholic Students.

At UPEI, we have our ‘headquarters’ in the Chap- laincy Centre where we ‘officially’ have bi-weekly meetings; although many of us can be found there regularly in the lounge just ‘hanging out.’ _

Apart from our regular meetings, we also have ‘get- togethers’ such as parties, dinners, bowling, etc. Each year many of us also attend a couple of confer- ences; the national Canadian Catholic Students’ Conference (which is held each August ata different Canadian university). Each November, there is also an Atlantic Conference. Again this conference is held at a different university each year but within the Atlantic region. (Next years’ Atlantic Conference will be hosted by us at UPEI). Each year there are normally retreats available as well. Coming in March, there will be aretreat at Belcourt Centre called ‘Quo Vadis’ ‘Where are you going?’. This retreat will be co-sponsored by UPEI Catholic Chap- laincy and the Diocesan Christian Vocation Commit- tee (for further information contact Catholic Chap- laincy).

Come and join us, give us your ideas, your sugges- tions, tell us what you think is relevant to the Catho- lic student of the 1990’s.

Normally our meetings are held on Tuesdays at 2:30 at the Chaplaincy Centre (in the lounge behind the large chapel.) This time is not written in stone and may change, so if you would like to join, please let us know and tell us of atime which would be more convenient to you. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting which will be held on March 3, 1992 at 2:30.

Spending Spree...NOT ry

At the Student Union Council meeting on Sunday February 16, 1992, the main topic onthe agenda was regarding Cory Large’s editorial in the February 13, 1992 issue. He had writtenabout the lavish spending of the Student Union budget, thinking that it would be © of interest tothe studentbody. Student Union, how- ever, accused the editorial as being false. For most part of the meetingconcerning this issue, Student Union President, Joanna Murphy, was visibly upset by the editorial. She had requested answers from Cory, asking him to defend himself for his writing. The atmosphere was initially professional, but once Mr. Large started to speak, the aloof, professional masks fell, revealing scornful remarks and resent- ments.

The Editor of X-Press is also a Senetor of this uni- versity. Student Union body thought that he hasa conflict in distinguishing his two roles due to his editorial. Asaresult, Ms. Murphymadea motion to Mr. Large’s resignation from one of his role...the choice was his to ponderupon. After much discus- sion, this motion was withdrawn.

’>Booze Cruise,’’ a phrase in the editorial had caused considerable upset from Ms. Murphy. She accused Mr. Large of quoting her without permission. Ironi- cally, the editor did not mention her name in his editorial. Mr. Large had also said “‘the newspaper does not need any permissions to quote in any arti- GIESh oi

Are editorials meant to be factual or the editor’s opinions? __ Student Union discussed over what the column is. In the past, editors have been writing about issues from their prospectus.

The meeting was, overall, a passionate discussion. Another day in Student politics.
