OBTUARY.

With feelings of regret was heard the death of Philip Steel, of Sturgeon, which occured on Friday, April 14th, 1899, at the age of 55 years. He was a quiet unassum- ing mao, of upright character, beloved by all who had the pleasure of his acquaint~ arce. For about three years he was troubled with bronchitis, and this proved fatal Hedied as he lived, trusting in a just God and sanctified by the last rites of the Catholic church. His funeral took place on Sunday, the body being followed vy a large number of people to St. Mary’s church, and from thence to the grave-rard where, arid the tears of a large circ'e of friends and relatives, the body was laid to rest to await the solemn triumph of the last day to rise, let us hope, in unity with our Divine Sa:i ur. Deceased leaves a wife and four children, 2 sons and 2 daugbters,to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and loving father.

The Overruling of a Judge.

A judge the other day awoke in the night to find his room in the possession of two armed burglars. Covered by the pistol of one of the marauders, the judge watched the proceedings with his usual judicial calm. One of the depredators found a watch. ‘‘ Don’t take that,’’ the judge d, ‘‘it has little value avd is a keepsake.’’ ‘*The motion is overruled,’’ replied the burglar. ‘‘] appeal,’’ rejoined the judge. The two burglars consulted, and the spokesmap then replied: ‘‘The appeal is allowed. The case coming on before a full tribunai of the supreme court, that body is of the unanimous opinion that the decree of the lower court should be sustained, and it is accordingly so ordered.’’ Pock- eting the watch, court adjourned.
