LONDON, (Reuters) - Scotland Yard's 114 police dogs have been putting teeth into the law with remarkable success since the four- lcgged sleuths began pounding regular beats in 1946.

The German shepherd and Labrador dogs have proved most successful in Hyde Park. the rolling acres of lawns. woods and flower gardens in the heart of the metropolis.

In 1946. the harassed police force. seriously depleted by war demands, received reports of 219 cases of handbag snatching. By 1952, the number had dropped to about 20.

The thieves have learned canine cops are harder to fool than the human ones. The lesson has often cost them torn trousers and deep tooth marks as well as arrest.

The London police dog accom- panies a London constable on his beat at night, sticking his muz- zle into side streets. alleys and empty buildings. and drawing at- tention to anything that. warrants investigation.

Many dogs, however. stay in the station. waiting to be sent by patrol car to the scene of a crime. Not only will the dog smell out a suspect, he will detain him by snapping his powerful jaws on ll slccvc or arm.

Wide public recognition first came to a police dog in January 1949, when Blaze. a German shep- herd, cornered three thieves lurk- ing in a garage and held them at bay until his policeman-master ar- rested them.

Two other police dogs. Rajah and Earl, won kudos in 1950. when they rounded up all 12 of a gang of young hooligans who were i'.rN'king property in Hyde Park ill night. rings have at-liieved re- rr-arkahle records. Ben, a black Labrador. has 114 arrests to his credit, and Rajah has 66.

Historic car is Still On Rounds

STR.A'I'!"0RD. Ont. (OP) - A horeelass carriage that was a reis- olutlonary development in 1898 can be seen chugging around the roads here now and then.

The historic car was the first of 25 LeRoy Autos made by the Good brothers here. It has been rater- ed to running condition by Lionel Sandy Rider, a garage mechanic whose hobby is rejuvenating "an- tique" cars.

The Lelioy looks like is buggy and is steered by e tiller bar in- stead of a steering wheel.

Dr. Milton Good, now of Wasaga Beach, Out, and the late Nelson Good manufactured 25 of the autos before they had to glveup for lack of financial backing.

Dr. Good says the vehicle was the first car to cross the Canada- United States border. The crossing was made in 1900 when he and his brother drove from Waterloo to Brown City. Mich.

Parts for the care were made in the basement of the Good home. A blmckamitih at Waterloo, named Kaufman, built the chassis.

HALIFAX. (CP)-Dr. E. D. How- land, economic adviser to the Nova Scotia government, said Tuesday it is his belief that the coal in- dustry can look to "ii far more profitable future" after a struggle of 10 or 15 years.
