CAMPUS GROUP TAKES ONTASK

A number of UPEI students.- will stage a conference for Maritime University Chapters of an organization that does not even exist here yet, in mid-January.

The students, under the dir— ection of Rachel Roy, will hold the annual Conference of Maritime Newman Clubs.

The Newman organization is a Roman Catholic oriented group (but without membership restrictions) that attempts to foster Christian action on campuses.

It is a form of "pastoral -Outreach" under the name of Newman. The society came about when governments began to take colleges over from churches, and chaolains sou- ght ways of continuing their‘ work on the campuses. They were named after John Henry Cardinal Newman, a 19th cen- tury Catholic philosopher who devoted much of his life to a theory of the university,

The UPEI students are form- ing a chapter, and they hope‘ to get off the ground after Christmas, according to Miss Roy. ' I

The whole issue of holding the conference came about

.as the result of the attend- ance of some UPEI students at the previous two Maritnne gatherings. They were asked t host this years, and ag- eed.

T he goal of the conference vill be to promote Christ- gin ideals and action througt .the media of friendship and the exchange of ideas, With t e imnt to foster these i eas and actions forcefully on the campuses of particip- 'at'ng universities.

Miss Roy says that any stu— .dents wishing to join the UPEI Newman and/or work.on the conference, should drqp’ into the weekly meetings held on Tuesdays at l P.M. in’t e Chapel. There are only a limited number of

It is unfortunate that our Student Union centre capacity is only 450 and Fire Regulat- ions do not allow more.‘

Canadian Armed Forces Mil- itia. Successful applicantS' will be enrolled with the rank of officer cadet. Two summer courses of twelve- weeks duration are required to qualify as a lieutenant. Pay for this summer training period is $94.50 per week with rations and quarters provided. 1
