Cyclists In the Streets of Cairo.
A correspondent of cneof the English sycling papers, writing from Egypt, gays of the increased uso of the bicycle in the land of the Pharaohs: ‘‘Machines directions. They are also seen dotted about everywhere, and piles of them may be continually ob- served stacked at the entrances to the principal hotels. There are about 2,000 English troops, and, as it is the fashion for bicycles to go wherever the military sojourn, Britons have made it particu- larly lively for the dusky denizens on the banks of old Fatkcr Nile. There are many good riders, some indifferent ones and a few atreciously bad, these latter mostly cousisucg af natives, who lock decidedly v2 —fortable astride a pair of wheels, At the citadel barracks the sergeants have 18 machines, and at the large barracks close to the Nile bridge any Lumbei cf them can be forfsd. At the Gezirah palace, the magnificent grounds of which are a dream to En- ropeans, ludies and gentlemen may be seen cycling at almost all hours of the day azndnight. The streets of Cairo are described as being decidedly lumpy, and, with the exception of the way out to the pyramids, roads as we understand the term are practically nonexistent. Outside the city it is all sand, and a six inch tire would be a boon to ride over the desert upon. A large riding school on nearly an acre of ground has been opened and is doing a thriving busi- ness.”’
In a London Hotei. The American visitor to London who stops at a certain hotel in that city finds many noveltics and conveniences that are not known here in America, where hotels are supposed to have reached the acme of luxury. It has an American plan dining room, but only a French bill of fare. It has an Indian room, where an Indian chef, in the costume of his country, prepares native dishes for those who de sire them. In this hotel each guest is known by the number of his rcom instead of his name, and it is rather edd to an Amcri- can to he addressed as ‘‘Mr. 960,’’ as though he were a convict in the peni- tentiary. On each floor day and night are to be found a maid, a valet end a waiter, who are at yeur service and have free access to your rooms. When you come home at night, if you are a man, yeu find your clothes pressed and cleaned and carefully packed away in a chest cf drawers. If you are a woman, the maid attends to frills and furbelows as though she were hired by you especially. Guests never bother with their keys. The maid or valet cn the floor takes charge of the key ardis ready at any time to open your dcor.—Chicago News.

Since its importance first began to be felt this gum has exerted an increasing infiuence upon the spread of civilization, especially along the Amazon and Ori- noco and their tributaries and the great streams which pour out from the interi- or of the dark continent. Para, formerly an insiguificant village, has grown to be a city cf 100,000 inhabitants, with med- ern features, and Manacs, up the river, is fast following it. India rubber is the

In A. D.'100 Dicscorides mentions a supstance which he calls saccharon asa great dainty among the people of the east. The sugar found in walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds is of exactly the same kind as that which exists in the juice of the su- gar cane.
Before 1850 Russia, Belgium and Hol- land produced no beet sugar. Now these countries are important factors in the sug- ar markets cf the world.
The candy makers say that the most profitable | part of their trade is in fancy candies, put up in ornamental boxes, the box frequently cutting more figure in the purchase than the goods.
In the second century Galen used sugar as a medicine, and at intervals it is men- tioned by medical writets as an important article of the pharmacopoeia, down to the time of Avicenna, who, with other physi- ciansin the ninth and tenth centuries, employed it as a medical remedy.
