A western correspondent writes: ‘‘ His Honor Mr. Justice Young is at present mak- ing his annual summer tour of this part of the island. I learned from him that he has alreaty made a similar tour of the eastern end of the Province. The fact that His Honor who has had so many opportunities for sight seeing abroad, prefers a quiet drive by car- riage to view the beautifal scenery of our Island home, speaks volumes for P. E. Island ag a summer resort for tourists. Nothing could be more euchanting than a morning or evening drive at this season along the roads skirting our magniticent sea coast. His Honor enjoys these drives immensely, and also takes = delight in noting the progress of the vusbandman along the route. He thus sets on example worthy of emulation by all who desire to imbue the rising generation with a spirit of patriotism.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. A Brutal Husband.
SIR, —The monotony of our quiet, every day life was broken to-day by an event, the like of which seldom, if ever before hap- pened in our midst. A party of gysies, in passing throngh this settlement, stopped on the road to cook their noonday meal, about halfamile from the village. Of course water was required, and the wife of the lazy rascal started¢to a creek, where, no doubt, she thought to fill hercans, To her dismay,there was no water to be found. On returning and making known the fruitless- ness of her search, she was immediately taken to task by her lord and master, who, seizing a large stone, hurled it at her with the precision of a well-trained arm. The projectile struck the poor woman on the back. Not satisfied, the wretch threw two more with ffeect. Then, seizing a large stick, madr after her with fearful impreca- tions falling from his lips. The children, four in number, set up a screaming which was piteous to listen to, the three great, burly brutes of dogs joining in the din. After a short, but sharp race, the gypsy succeeded in catching up with the woman. Une or two well directed blows with the stick felled her to the earth. After a couple of savage kicks, he left her with bleeding face and unable to walk for some time. Your correspondent who was at work in a field near by rushed, as did others, to the scene, and was only prevented from lay- ing violent hands on the wretch by the dogs, who seemed to share the terrible temper of their master. The poor woman, when last seen, Was sitting by the roadside, sobbing like to break her heart, nursing a child a few months old. We call the attention of the proper authorities to the matter.

Forest Fires. Oxecon, Aug. 13. The atmosphere for miles around is thick with smoke, cinders and burning brands falling in showers. Ail the north-west country seems to be burning in forest fires, It is estimated that the total damage by | forest fires in the north-west this year will ree ap to $500,000. Fires are burning all |along the railroad lines and rivers and at ‘night illuminate.the hills and mountains. The tlames swooped down yesterday on the settlement of Cedar Mills and lett the country barren. An extensive fire is rag- ing in Southern Oregon, and a number of houses and barns have been burned. Some of the fires are the fork of tramps.

Bodies Recovered.

An average of two bodies have been found every day during the past week. There are undoubtedly « great many more in cel- lars all over town. At the present rate of clearing up they will not all be exhumed this year. Two bodies recovered yester- day were identified as Evan Hughes and Miss Bertha Stryar, Portland.

It is rumored that the Cabinet considered the Behring Sea question at yesterday's session, and decided against the United States Government. A claim for compen- sation for the seizure of the Black Diamond will be transmitted to the Imperial authori- ties as soon as further documents arrive from Victoria.

Terrible Accident.
Cuicago, Aug. 14. The Burton Building, corner of Clinton and Van Buren streets, gutted by fire re- cently, collapsed this morning, burying 4 number of workmen in the ruins. Until the debris is removed the number of casu- alities will not be known. One was taken out dead and another dying. Ministerial ‘Movements Orrawa, Aug. 13. Hon. The Court has found Boulanger guilty of the charge of embezzling public funds and refused to allow extenuating circumstances. The Court sentenced Boulanger, Count Dillon, and Henri Richfort to be deported to a fortified place.
