Mr. Dechamrpel awoke just as the lioness was disappearing through the tent flap. He raised the alarm and natives set up a terrific din to startle the beast which, how- ever, disappeared into the jungle with the baby between his teeth. Mr. Dechsrnpel, armed with a rifle, and natives armed with_ spears. immediately set up s pur- suit and at last found the lioness lying in a small clearing with the crying baby beside it. lvfr. TORONTO, August 2.—(C. P): Arthur G. Slaght, K-C., today tol the “Ahltibi Deal" ROW! 001715115" sion that Senator Arthur Meighen had been appointed to the Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission at a time when the Ontario Gov- ernment had on fyle a petition from Vancouver shareholders, in ‘com- panies of which the Senator was an officer, asking for an investigation into his business conduct.

The statcmmt which was not ad-l mitted as evidence came when Mr. Slaght, Royal Commission Counsel. was seeking to ask questions of former Attomey-General W. l-L} Price regarding the propriety of- Mr. Meighens appointment. TheI questions were disallowed on the ground Mr. Meighens appointment did not come within the scope of the inquiry.

Subsequently Mr. Price said he had turned the petition over to the security frauds prevention commis- sioner for investigation and that it contained nothing of s. criminal nature. Mr. Slaght, who had said the petition charged the Senator with fraud, challenged Mr. Price's‘ assertion that it contained nothing of a criminal nature but the mat- ter was dropped after an argument because of inadmissability of the petition.

Mr. Meighen sought vigorously to prevent Mr. Slaghts statement be- fore it was made, maintaining he should indicate the purpose of ques- tions he was about to ask and prove their relevance to the inquiry. He charged Mr. Slaghts purpose was to damage his political reputation. He said an inquiry had been launched before the Senator's ap- pointment nnd that ii had been stopped after his nppointmcnt.

A declaration by Mr. Meiglien that he would have been "ashamed" to seek to bring out such evidence caused Chief Justice E. R. Latch. ford, Royal Commission Chairman, to reveal efforts had been made m prevent him from acting in the probe.

The Chief Justice said : "You would be ashamed if you knew what had been written to me to deter me from acting in ma. inquiry."
