PRESS RELEASE

_ The ongoing Litton debate has focussed Islanders’ attention more than ever before on issues surrounding the arms race and national defence policy. An opportunity for further discussion of these issues will occur at a public meeting on Wednesday, March 19, at the Charlottetown Hotel, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The featured speaker will be Major General (retired) Leonard V. Johnson, former Commandant of the National Defence College of Canada in Kingston. The topic is

“Alternative Defence Policies for Canada."

Major General Johnson is member of Generals for Peace and Disarmament. This international organization is comprised of a number of retired Generals from various western countries, including Germany, Norway, Portugal, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, France, and Canada. In both 1984 and 1985, they met in Vienna with their counterparts from Warsaw Pact countries to seek constructive new ways to bring about disarmament and a lasting peace.

In a Memorandum of June,

1985, addressed to “The Heads

of State and Governments of the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance and the Warsaw Treaty Organization,” the Generals for Peace and Disarmament implored that governments “Outlaw any

propaganda for nuclear war and a nuclear first-use option. Put an end to any planning of nuclear warfare. Stop any plan for cross border conventional armed forces operations. Do not militarize space.”
