Children in Winter.

The maintenance of body tempera- ture is an exceedingly impertant mat- ter, and itis, influenced markedly by | the following circumstances, viz, the! state of the body, that is, whether at | or active; second, the food and clothing of the invalid; and lastly the temperature of the atmosphere of the place in which the individual is. Now,)| although the influence of muscular | activity on the body temperature is not | very marked yet it is appreciable, for | of a cold morning all instinctively | quicken their pace, and doubtless ail | know well that a person who is exposed | to severe cold will perish much more quickly if he lie down than if he keep moving. For these reasons, then, some in-door employment should be provid- ed for children, even if it ismo more than tossing a ball about the house.

it is very generally and doubtless correctly believed that fat foods are of much assistance in maintaining the bo ly temperature, It must appear then that-such food is especially desir— able in winter. The same is true, in-| deed, of heated substances. generally. Soups, mush and milk,and chocolate for drinking, are prime articles for winter diet. A little sugar and butter added to the mush and milk, when it is about to be eaten, will probably cause some to take it who otherwise would not. Fruit, raw or cooked, used oc- casionally with the morning meal, is also very benefical. It is probable that if the foed of the day were given at four meals the child would receive more benefit from it than from the same food given at three meals, necessarily at longer intervals.

Woollen clething generally is the best ; for outer garments the material known as lady’s cloth weuld probably do very well. Mitts and leggings are very important, for with cold handsfand feet itis hardly possible for the bedy generally to be comfortable. Taking the children out is a voryessential and much neglected matter. Boisterous winds and an outdoor temperature of less than twenty-five degrees makes it neeessary that a sheltered spot shall be sought for the airing ; if, however, it is impossible to do as here suggested, and the little folks must remain day after day, let them be kept in the sunny room of the house ; and if the house happens to have no sunBy roomin it, remember this, and when ehanging get a house with at least one sunny room. Twenty- five cents invested ina thremometer to hang in the room in which the children aie kept will be a very geod investment. For the sitting room a temperature of tén degrees lessthan that just mention- ed would be right. When the rooms beeome too warm, admit the outer air by lowering the window sash one inch from the top, and raising it the same from the bottom. Drafts of air through any apartment are very undesirable.— Philadelphia Times.

The new German Navy List for 1884 is just issued. The Imperial Navy now comprises thirteen iron clads, of which seven,are frigates and six corvettes. There are thirty-one cruisers, of which twenty-one are corvettes and ten gua- boats, besides thirteen ironclad gunboats and fifteen torpedo beats for defence. Herr von Caprini; the German Minister of Marine,has prepared a memorandum for presentation te the Reichstag on the necessity of areform of the German navy. He declaresin his paper that the material of which the yessels are constructed and their armaments are obsolete, and that fhevessels are unfit for the service required them. He Announces that he will ask for a large increase in the vote for the navy.
