This steamer is now owned by the above named gentleman and his brether, Hugh McMillan, merchant, of New Haven. A VERY CLOSE CALL. | A North Sydaey, C. B., despatch of the 5th says : The American fishing schooner ; Alice, Capt. Rowe, of Gloucester, left here }on Monday to prosecute her fishing voyage. At noon on that day a northeast gale struck her, carrying away her sails. ‘The vees-l being near land, off Lingan, dropped her ‘anchors. The seas running very high swept over the vessel, and at times buried her under. The crew tovk refuge in the rigging. This lasted for an hour, when the cables broke and the vessel went in among the recks on the northern side of Lingan head, where the cliffs were forty or fifty feet high, with the breakers dashing against their base. The crew report that to all appearance there was no possibility of safety. Death stared them in the face. /Qn the shore were a few farmers, who ' realized their danger, and not being able to help them, expressed their sympathy by /weeping. For an hour the vessel tossed ia the breakers closer and closer in under the _ cliff, and was meanwhile breaking up. Now |the Captain showed his bravery and pre- 'sence of mind by guing down tu the deck

Poirier threw it from half way up the foremast to the top of the chff It was caught and fastened to a three inch line, which was quickly pulled in by those on .the bank and made fast to the trees, and | the ether end was fastened to the vessel’s ‘foremast by means of a bowling over the line. Simon Porrior was the first man to be rescued from the wreck, and one by one the crew of eleven aud the captain watched their chance as the breakers subsided and slipped down on deck and were drawn ashore in the same manner. While getting out, Edwin Burt was washed overboard twice and got his head split open and his leg badly burt. Others were washed over- board and bick again by the sweep of the baeakers, Simon Porrior also getting his leg badly hurt. The crew lost everything, and the vessel ia a total wreck. The gale yesterday was a terrific one, and blew at the rate of sixty miles an hour. A large three-story building, owned by Thomas McLellan, was blown across the street, and several barns were blown down,

They area total loss, but all the crews were saved. On Monday a fierce southeaster blew from morn. ing till nine in the evening without damage to the vessels moorrd in the road and harbor. But then a change occurred, with a perfect hurricane from thenorthwest,the like of which the oldeat inhabitants declare has not been witnessed here ejnce sixty years ago. Heavy damage has been done to the shipping in port. About ten schooners are high and dry around the harbor, with the winter fleet, moored for winter quarters, bad!y d«maged. A HARD TIME.

The schooner Beatrice, 78 tone, Capt. John Arnold, of Halifax, was driven ashore on Hog Island, at 8 o'clock on Monday morning (1st inst) The crew had to re- main on board until 5 o’clock in the even- ing, when, atter a hard and dangerous struggle, they got ashore ; but after wan- dering about until 11 o'clock, endeavoring to find a house, they began to freeze, and their only hope was to regain the vessel, which they succeeded in doing after an- other hard struggle. There they remained until next day. The captain is owner, and the vessel is only partly insured.

REPORTS FROM CANSO. At Canso the storm of Wednesday was not nearly so severe as that of Monday. The schooner Lida and Lizzse has got off

The schr. Morien, of Cow Bay, Martell master, from Charlottetown for Lynn, Mass » arrived at Georgetown on Friday, having experienced a terrible time in the southeast gale on Wednesday night. The Morien iost foresail, forestaysai!l, jib and fying jib, one anchor and chain, and Seventy fathoms of hawser, and barely escaped stranding at Cape Bear. The cap- tain will repair damage and proceed. The vessel is owned by Archibald & Co,, Cow Bay.

THE HEAVIEST EVER KNOWN,

At Glace Bay, C. B., the tide was the highest and the sea the heaviest ever known. Every sea swept over the Napoleon If{, and the hands on board barely escaped. The gale at North Sydney was very seve re. The schooner Daisy ran ashore. The brigt. Elizs, of St. John’s; Nfld, was damaged and also the schooners City Point, Jessie and Alpine. The schooner Maggie Millard is a total Joss. The Bella May and Corsair aro driven ashore high and dry.

GOT OFF AGAIN,

The three-masted schooner that got ashore at West River, Lot 47, #s reported in The Examiner, got off again next day, and it is reported arrived since at George- town after a hard run ef it.

BREAKWATER DAMAGED.

Campbell's Cove Breakwater was badly damaged by the storm, the covering being all torn off, besides receiving other damage. Carlton's lobster factory at Campbell's Cove was also carried away by the sturm.
