Dear Editor,

One would think that this issue is going to be a bitter sweet one because it is the last issue of the year -- NO!

The moment I walked into the X-Press office this morning, the words ‘‘Women’’, ‘‘men’’ and ‘‘pigs’’ rang into my ears. GREAT! Here we go again. I guess the bitter part is there, but what ever happened to the sweet part?

Whata laugh! I should have known better. Emotions are severely divided among the X-Press members, and to make it worse, professors interfared, and Student Union tried to feel important. What a waste of time and money.

It is just as well that summer holiday is goimg up.

Everyone needs to steam off. I suggest going to the beach...the colder the water, the better.

Dear Editor: i, Academic freedom. Are there any limits to this concept? Shoulda professor always be allowed to show what she/he wishes regardless of whether it is _ fact or fiction, promotes knowledge and understandin, or prejudice and hatred? Every reasonable person including myself contrary to popular belief, believes in freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression including freedom of the pressand othermediaof — communication. But this is an ideal. Slander and libel laws restrict freedom of belief, opinion and expres- sion but yet they are viewed as valid in our society. And that is only one example. There are many others, After challenging Professor Laurie LeClair’s judg- ment for showing the film the ‘‘Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death,’’ in an introductory anthropology class last week Ihave been asked to : explain my apparently contradictory views. I’m going to be honest. I really can’t explain them. I’ve been 3 | wrestling with my own conscience over the past few days because I like to think of myself as an open- — minded person and my objection to his judgment makes me feel as if 1am not. All'I know is that I have viewed the film which is earmarked as ‘ ‘property of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology’’ ant it makes me feel ill. 1am a feminist and I am proud | to say so. Nothing anyone says can make me feel otherwise. This film, however, made me feel like everything I believe in in that regard is a joke, som thing to be trivialized, laughed at and dismissed. Ia certainly nota perfect person but I believe I am worthwhile enough to have the right to not have something so fundamental to my personal beliefs brought into an educational arena and stomped on. I make this statement with the STRONGEST CLARI . CATION thatI can which isto say thatlamnot ~ demanding that anything I believe in cannot be subject to criticism and review. Th: t would be ludicrous. But ; I want U.P.E.I. students to know that this film isa — movie, a work of FICTION. It does not represent — things as they are in the world of feminism but rathet how others like to interpret them in order to discou ud such a movement. To make a long story short, it is an” exercise in misrepresentation. I would be happy to = provide anyone who is interested in viewing it with my personal copy which I obtained for the purposes: of review. I would like to take this opportunity to _ publicly apologize to Professor LeClair. I do this of my own free will and because I want to.
