iriencls. He is quite satisfied with his own ccmpany. He is independ' ent. There is no more independent person in all the Green Forest. He asks no lavors. He gives no fa- vors. He comes and goes as he pleases and he has no regard what- ever for the rights 0! his neighbors. In a land where in winter there is little to eat., Glutton somehow manages to keep alive. That is be- cause he is tough.

Now, while he is rough and tough, he is smart. Being rough and tough isn't enough. one must also be smart to live through winter way up in the northern woods. In some ways Giutton the Wolverine is one or the smartest or all the people living there. It is up in that country that the fur ocats of all the people who wear fur, little and big. is at its best through the winter. so al- ways they must be watching for traps. '

There is nothing that,the tours in fur dread and hate as much as they do thedreadiul steel traps with the cruel paws. They fear these even more than the dreadful guns in the hunti ,, season. You see if they are smart they usually can see the hun- ters with the dreadful guns in time to escape. But traps they cannot see because they are so carefully hid- den. What is worse. often where the traps are set food is left, sometimes that will tempt a hungry, perhaps starving. fur-bearer. It is so placed that whoever tries to take it is al- most sure to stop in the trap. That is treachery. -

So all the folks in fur hate the cruel traps and the trappers, all but Glutton the Wolverine. Glutton doesnt hate them at all. No. sir. Gluttcn the Wolverine doesn't hate traps and trappers. it is just opposite with Glutton. He is glad when he ilnds that a trapiper is set- ting traps in his neighborhood. The truth is that Glutton, who is a great traveler. aotuaiy goes look- ing for traps. I suspect that he lsughs at the trappers.

As I have said belore he is smart He is so smart that it somehow seems as if he knows more about the traps. where they are and how they are set. than do the trapper: themselves. When he finds a trap line he seldom goes hungry for long. Usually he can steal the bait with- out sprlnging the trap. so he lives -well when others are starving. Trappers hate Glutton the wolve- rine. He often proves himself smart- er than they are. when others are caught in the traps Giutton makes a dinner of them.

Natural defense brought East- West two tricks in diamonds. two in hearts and one in clubs. and so the penalty was 500 points.

This in itself was not calamitous, ct course. but it was nevertheless a. high price to pay for Teaching 3 contract that "had no chance ior lul- liliment.

The key bid in the auction was South's leap to three hearts. The partners were using this jump re- bid as an" absolute lorce. and so North, despite his extreme reluct- ance to go on, was obliged to "find" another bid! Naturally. Ncrth did not make his choice oi iour clubs with any high enthusiasm; in fact. he thought ior quite a while. trying to decide between the evils of three notrump and the call no selected. but some action h-ad to be taken. and it didn't matter much that North decided to do-his side was going to be high!

It is true that quite a lew ex- perts use the same system as North- th used here-to play respond- ert jump rebid in the "same suit" as a force-but the logic of this treatment is certainly open to question! The case at hand is typic- al of a. great many other cases. North was forced to do something which he was sure was wrong; in short. he was deprived cl the chance to use his judgment.

The Culbertson system treats the jump rebid by both opener and re- sponder as a mere urge-and most decidedly, playing Culbertson. a player in North's position may, i! he chooses, stop short at game when the danger signalkare clearly fly- ing, as they were here. After all, -with a hand ciierlng a sound play fcr game opposite Nort-h's cards. (North should reason). Bcvuth could jump all the way to four hearts!
