Fine Teeth and How to Preserve Them,’ Valuable Washes. '
Dentistry has reached such perfection. that though the shape of the individual tooth cannot be controlled, the general. contour of the jaw may be regulated. The semi-circle of teeth can be flattened or arched as beauty requires. : The popular advice as to the care of the teeth is too indefinite. A general washing night and morning does not suffice to keep teeth brilkiant and free from discoloration. A soft smallish

The bicarbonate counteracts the effect of any acidity of the stomach on the teeth. : Pure castile soap may be used occa- sionally with benefit; the daily use of soap on the teeth is discouraged by the best dentists. Suds leave a deposit of soap beneath the gums that encourage their recession. ; A few drops of listerine, or myrrh, or weak carbolic acid and water, make an excellent mouth-wash, antiseptic, heal ing and hardening to the gums. The inyrrh leaves an aroma as of violets in the mouth. A handsome and fastidious woman of my acquaintance takes inter- nally several times a week, a little pellet of rhubarb dissolved in bicarbonate of soda and water to sweeten her breath. The beauty of the mouth is not mace complete by the rosiness and smoothness of the lips and the perfection of the teeth between; also its size is a minor consideration. What we demand of it is that it shall please us; if it pleased us we are apt to call it a pretty mouth. It

THE APPETITE FOR OLIVES. It Has Grown in This Country Since thy Native Fruit Came Into Market.

California olives are at a premium. Last year’s crop is already exhausted and the grocers are unable to supply their customers.
So great has become the consumption of pickled California olives within the last few years that the supply is entirely | inadequate for the demand. The amount } of olives prepared for the market this year was double that of last year. The | crop was handled and pickled during the months of December and January. It was ready for the market in February and in less than six months it is entirely exhausted,
Withiti the last two weeks Secretary Filcher, of the state board of trade, has received numerous; letters from the gro- cers of this city and of the fowns in the interior asking where ripe pickled Cali- forna olives could be secured. Secretary Filcher put himself in communication with the various large growers of the state, but he has received no enconTag- ing word.

INEXPENSIVE SHRUBBERY-
It Would Add to the Beautyand Value of Every Farm,
Many farmers are deterred from plant- ing crnamental shrubs and trees by the supposed necessary expense. ‘They have a variety of large and small fruit, but these are part of the economy of the farm, and represent money well invested. Fruit trees and plants are longer in com- ing to maturity than annual crops, but are just as sure in the end; and the wise farmer is fully aware that apple orchards and strawberry beds pay better interest than county banks.
But with shrubbery it is diffetent. The farmer may realize that ornamenta- tion has something to do with determin ing the value of his place, but it does
apple orchard and vineyard, and he puts it off from year to year, until money is more plentiful, or he has more time, and the bare surroandings of his house are left to the charity of the small annuals which his wife and daughters raise from seed or are able to carry over from year to year by means of siips, and perhaps to the occasional sweet-briar or peony root, procured from a flower-loving neigh- bor. It is not that the farmer disjikes shrubbery or is niggardiy with his money. He jis rarely caught up with his work, and there are always important things waiting his attention—things that take money and time, and are of prime importance to the prosperity of the farm. And, then, ready money is undeniably scarce even to the average farmer, whois

If the farmer knew how cheaply his grounds could be ornamented, I am con- vinced there would be fewer unsightly yards in the country, Even the boys and girls, with a little trouble, could sur- round the house with beautiful trees and shrubs and clambering vines, and the cost would be only a few days’ work each year. There is scarcely a tree or shrub that will not propagate readily from cut- tings in a moist piece of ground in the spring,and give them one or two hoeings. By the second year they will be large enough to transplant to permanent quart- ers. Herbaceous plants, like lillies, phloxes, peonies, irises, yuccas, anemones and hundreds of others, can have their roots divided and subdivided, and the plants will be alithe more thrifty for the division.
Pruning is the secret of successful shrub-growing, and in nearly every lo cality can be found a fair assortment of shrubs and plants whose owners would be perfectly willing to give away the cuttings of each pruning; and cattings of such desirable shrubs as might not be found in the neighborhood could easily be procured from a nursery for a few cents. I know a young man who has several acres of fine shrubbery, nearly all of which he raised from cuttings pro- cured in the neighborhood. What would have cost him several hundred dollars at @ nursery only cost hima few days’ la- bor and some years of waiting. There are dozens of handscme California privet hedges in this vicinity, all raised from cuttings furnished by a gentleman a few miles away. who prunes his hedge three or four times each summer. I have prop- agated thousands of willows, poplars, hydrangeas, altheas, roses, spireas and other trees and shrubs and lost less than 5 per cent. of the cutting. Outside of the saving, there is a fascination in rais- jug one’s own shrubbery; and, if desir- able, one can easily make it a source of no inconsiderable profit. I know small farmers who add a hundred dollars or more each year to their income by grow- ing a small assortment of p!ants for lo- cal trade.—New York Ledger.

Ozone is now frequently employed by electrotherapists for the treatment of tr- berculosis, anaemia, and affections of the threat and nose. It is an admirable purifier of bad air, and is used in the library of the British Museum, in Lon- don, and other places of public resort

In hospitals, ozone is manufac- tured by large static ma:zhines, and then dissipated through the wards by means of electric fans. One of the latest novel- ties in electrical instruments is an ozone inhaler fur domestic use, by which a patient can carry out at home the treat ment prescribed by his physician. It con- sits of several tubes a few inches long, surrounded by an aluminum armature, with electric connections. One terimna! of the secondary coil is connected to a copper wire running the length of a vacuum tube, the other to the aluminum covering, which has numerous points di- rectly toward it, From these points, when the current is turned on, is sent out a stream of sparks*‘of purple and magenta tint, and the oxygen of the air is converted into ozone, The operation of this instrument has a most refreshing and beneficial effect on the patient.

If there is anything that an Oriental dislikes it is somber garments, and it is said that the only reason why Queen Vic- toria’s Munshi, her Hindustani teacher and interpreter, has asked for leave of absence was to go to India and be cheer- ful while the Court of St. James is in half-mourning. ‘To be sure he said he was ill and must needs go home to In- dia to recruit his health, But as the Queen's Indian domestics who remain are in intense and melancholic sulks be- cause they are obliged to go about in unbecoming brown and white instead of their usual splendor of color, it is be- lieved that the Munshi’s determination to absent himself until after the period of mourning for Prince Henry had its origin in the same dislike of seriousness. Brown is considered good enough black for East Indians to wear, and it certainly harmonizes with their complexions. The Queen’s desire to see her ladies of the bed-chamber and her maids of honor in half-mourning or serious apparel when they are in attendance upon her is more easily met, for there is nothing that can
