Billy Mink began scratching furiously in the grass some twelve feet back from the edge of a high sand bank by the Big River. He was trying to dig a hole. Yes, sir. Bil-ly Mink was trying to dig a hole. It was a most foolish thing for him to be doing. It was a most foolish thing for him to be doing, for Billy Mink isn't a digger. He has neither the claws nor the know-how of a real digger. Be- sides digging is too hard work. If he wants to use 9 hole in the ground he Just moves into one that someone else has dug.

"Why work when someone else will do it for you?" says Billy.

Usually this plan worked very well. but now and then there was a time -when he wanted a hole and there was no one around to do the digging for him. This was one of them. Down in the ground right under him was the home of Battle: the Kingfisher and in it were Rattler children, how many he didn't know. That there were a lot of them he knew by the cries

usuauy, this is a. sound princlpk. but there are times when it is wise to bid all as cards. in a manner 01 speaking. Consider this case:

south opened the bidding with one spade. (Some good players would prefer a club on South's hand. but it is this writer's opinion that the spade opening "stands out."

East-West did not enter the suc- tion. and the bidding proceeded. i-we hearts by North. three clubs by South. When this three-club bid got north, certain inferences were unmistakable. south was marked with at least ten cards in the black suits; and he could not be weaker than ace-queen Jn both 5"”! to Justify his bidding. unless he happened to have the ace or king of hearts. or the king 'of dia- monds. His rapid ascension to the three-level could not have been justified on lesser values.

North fully realized that he could, if hechoeebidthreedlamondsover three clubs in an effort to show control of diamonds, and later Jump to five clubs as a slam in- vitation. He also appreciated the more im.pa-taut fact, however. that this series of bids might not Mil) South very much; that if South had only his minimum for the two bids he had made, he would not be able to "move" over five clubs.

So. on the fairly reasonable as- sumption that South's three red Cards floured to be a singleton heart and two diamond rather than the other way around, North took it upon himself to Jump Straight from three clubs to six clubs. In so doing. he was technic- ally overblddlng his own holding, but he was accurately appraising

he had heard. The fact is there were ten. If he could get them they would make a feast not only for himself but for Mrs: Billy and four young Minks.

The doorway to that home was in the sand bank just out of reach from the top of the bank, and equally out of reach from below. New between them and that din- rter they so wanted there were only grass roots and a little earth. But those.grass roots were tough and that earth was packed solidly.

"H on-ly I had digging claws like Johnny Chuck, or even Jimmy Skunk," whlned Billy as he scratched furiously without even really starting a hole. Little Strirped Chipmunk could have done very much better than Billy Min-k was doing. Mrs. Billy took is turn. but she was no better dig- ger than Billy.

Now it just happened that Red- dy Fox had chosen to do a little hunting along the shore of the Big River. He often has good hunting there. He hunted in the grass back from the water for Mice and,look- ed along the edge of the watkr for a dead fish that might have been washed ashore. so at last he came to the steep sand bank in which Rattles the Kingfisher and Mrs. Rattles had dug their home. He had known where it was since the very day they had started digging, but he wasn't interested. He couldn't get to it and he knew it. This time he decided to go to the edge of the bank. From there he could look far up and far down the Big River.

He was almost there when he saw something or someone mov- ing in the grass. Instantly he froze. That is he stood still, as still as if actually frozen stiff.

"Billy Mink and Mrs. Billy," he exclaimed under his hresth. "What in the world are they up to? They are so busy they have forgotten to keep watch. They don't see me. Perhaps if I am careful I can get near enough to catch one of them."

He flattened himself in the gran close to the earth. He began to crawl slowly, careful-ly, stopping often and keeping perfectly still every time Billy or Mrs. Billy hastily looked around. so intent were they on what they were do- ing that Raddy managed to creep within jumping distance of them.

"They are digging, or trying to. I wonder what for," thought Red- dy as he drew his hind legs under hi.m for a sudden leap.

I "Cowl cawl caw!" shrleked Blacky the crew, who happened along just then and looking down saw what was going on.

Raddy sprang at Billy Mink who was nearest. Now Reddy is quick, He has to be or he would go huh- sry most of the time. But quick as he is Billy Mink is quicker.
