held Monday in East Elgin, Ontario and Yale, B. C., One thing, that may be safely inferredfrom the re- sults_ is that MacKenzie King Liberalism, both east and west, is down. andiout. In East Elgin, a purely agricultural constituency, the farmer candidate, Mr McDiarmaid, had been in the field long before either 0f his opponents even had a look in- His two oppon- ents were not nominated until after the writs were issued, the Conservative candidate, Mr. Stansell be- ing the" last in the field. From the outset there was a strong element of doubt as to the probable result, but the returns show that the" large majority of 1572 vptes-given the United Farmer candidate in the pro nncial election was reduced to 208, an eloquent trib ute to, the splendid record of the Meighen govern- ment. With two candidates against him Mr. Stansell the Conservative candidate, made a most creditable showing and there is little doubt that had he been in the field a little earlier he would have won out even against the tremendous odds which he had to face. There never was any doubt as to what the Liberal candidate was going to get. In Yale, B. C., the vacancy was caused by the resignation of Hon. lllartin Burrill who had been returned unopposed in .1917 to accept the position of Parliamentary Librarian. Incomplete returns last night gave McKelvie, Governmen can- didate 4891 and Edgett_ Independent Liberal 4491.

GOING IT ALONE.

“The most important conference since ,con- federation!” Such, the Patriot solemnly informs its readers, was the conference held in Halifax last week between the premiers of the Maritime Provin- ces to consider the claims-of their respective pro- vinces in connection with the western school lands.

_- And yet the government of this province which had,

while in opposition and since its untimely birth_ built its hopes of salvation upon these claim,s thought so little of the ‘importance of the conference that it sent only Mr. J. H. Bell to represent the province- Was there no other man in the government who knew anything about these claims, no other man who might have been of some assistance to Mr. Bell in discussing so important a question? No other man who might have suggested something which Mr. Bell might have forgotten? No other man who knew some thing that Mr. Bell did not know?.

Where was the Attorney General whose partic dlar department this particular question concerns?

When ex-Prelnier and Attorney General, now Chief Justice Mathieson presented this question on several occasions he was accompanied by one of his strongest colleague, Hon. A. E. Arsenault and the case they jointly made was conclusive and acknow- ledged to be unassailable. If Mr. Bell ever reaps any

— harvest from these claims it will be from what Mr.

Mathieson and Mr. Arsenault sowed and his chances of reaping, if he has any, would surely have been enhanced, if he could show that he was backed up by his colleagues or at least had their sympathy Pos sibly his faith in his Attorney General is not very strong, possibly also the Attorney Generals faith in his leader is not such as would warrant colaboration. In any case the importance of these claims is such that, whether in preparation for further presenting ‘them or in renewing the presentation the govern- ment should use whatever strength and intelligence it may have at its disposal. The complete case for this province has already been laid before the Fed- eral authorities by ex-Premier Mathieson and ex- Premier Arsenault. Whatever eﬂorts the present government may put forth to effect a settlement, they cannot add to the completed case and there is a growing fear that they will bungle it as they have bungled everything they have touched. Possibly this is why Mr. Bell has been allowed to go it alone.

This is the time of year when the eyes of the children, young and old, are watching the ponds and the lakes and the rivers and welcoming the night ly intensifying frost. In this city Government Pond has already been exploited both over and under the ice foiginevitably, the first adventurers run risks and not always successfully. Yearly for some time past attention has been directed to the possibilities of this beautiful sheet of water and of ice, as a place of recreation for the children but yearly also nothing or next to nothing has been done until too late. A little expense on the part of the City Council would make this pond a pleasure and health resort which many would appreciate and-none. would consider too costly. There are many young people of both sexes to whom an open air rink, such as is possible here, would be a godsend. Cannot something be done this winter to afford our young people this bit of inexpen sive pleasure? Successive Councils have made the attempt but usually after the snow has banked up the ice and mad-c it impossible to make a rink. The time to begin is now and few things that the Coun-
