Letters To the Editor...

Mr. Editor:

In a recent environmental instalment in the X-Press it is suggested: 1. that people turn off the water while soaping in the shower; 2. that water should be cooled in the refrigerator instead of letting the water run from the faucet; 3. that only full loads of laun- dry ought to be washed; 4. that the toilet should be flushed only when necessary; 5. and that people should locate their water meter and compare readings for the purpose of spotting leaks.

I feel that some clarification is in order. For exam- ple, which tap should I turn off first when taking a shower (the ice cold one or the scalding hot one)? Doesn’t cooling water in the fridge use more energy? Do [have to shop for more clothing so that I will have a full load? Just how many loads do I have to drop before I’m allowed to flush? As for that water meter... well, I’m still looking for the damn thing!

Is lower tuition the best interest of students? Yes! This way more students could generate enough of their own funds rather than relying on government bursaries. If tuitions were substantially increased, more and more students would be looking for these bursaries. This obviously leads to increased depend- ence on the government, so are we really further ahead?

How does this national journalist figure that students of lower or middle income families are subsidizing students of higher income students? Do higher income families not pay taxes as well? And are they into ina higher tax bracket? Why should those students who

have saved their hard earned money (or, in the case of |

parental support, their parents hard earned money) be penalized so that more students (who have not done this scrimping and saving) can rely on the government to put them through university? Some students with bursaries will argue that they do scrimp and save, but maybe they don’t know what real saving and real work Is. And then again, I’msure some do. Those are the ones who should be considered for bursaries. Those who pay their own way through university would most likely put more into and get more out of

their education since they would think about how: they had work for the money they are about to sp In years to come, would they not be much more prouder to say, ‘‘I started with nothing but througt hard work and determination .... lam now a succes fulxxx’’ rather than saying, ‘‘ I relied on the gove ment to get to where I am today.”’ this policy woul also eliminate some not-so-serious students who at not using the government’s money (aka the taxpaye money) to its full pctential.

Why should students be divided into two discrimin ing categories-those who pay more and those whog their education subsidized? Individual cost should] equal (dollar-wise, notasa percentage of income) amongst students, I have nothing against student loans, in which the money has to be repaid to the government (which is only just), but I don’t wantt hear people crying that they aren’t getting theiredu tion for nothing. Even if tuitions were raised, woul this money go towards bursaries? Or would the go\ ernment waste it in some other area in it’s typical fashion?

Dear Mr. Large,

Normally I ignore bad journalism. Iam always rea to forgive incompetence if I feel that people could have know better. Unfortunately, in this case, sir, you should have know better.

Please do not publish letters to the editor or newspi per articles if the authors refuse to acknowledge the beliefs. If only inflames people’s opinions without providing any new substance to the debate to print unsigned articles. Last week’s X-Press contained several pieces which were not signed, including the Campus Women’s page. Atleast the notorious Bac lash column was signed, an indication that its autho is not ashamed of his views. Authors who cannottal pride in what they believe in are today’s intellectual Nazis, for they try to suppress other’s beliefs witho having to defend themselves from attack.

Iam appalled at the extremism prevalent in the arti- cles in ourcampus paper. Are there no moderates — left? Do not suggest the usual ‘‘If you don’t like it why don’t you work for the paper?’” - I do not hat the time. I am taking six courses this semester, the idea of having to contribute something weekl
