OBITUARY.

PASSED AWAY FROM EARTHLY SCENES IN CALIFORNIA,

Samuel McDonald, brother of Mr. Allan McDonald, Cardigan, and Malcolm McDonald, Rustico, Mrs. Ralph Carr, Stanhope, Mrs. Joshua Crossman, Wellington, died on 22nd of March. Speaking of the funeral of the late Samuel McDonald, of St. Heiena, California, the Star of tbat city says: the Methodist Church was crowd- ed on Sunday afternoon with friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to the late Samuel McDonald. The news of Mr. McDonald’s death was a shock to the community, for

j while he had been sick a long time the

end seemed sudden, for it removed from our midst an honored citizen. Floral offerings were profuse and al- most hid the casket from view. The funeral services were held at 2 o’clock,

and were conducied by Rev. J. W Robinson assisted by Rev. H. C. Fallman. The former preached the

sermon, eulogizing in eloquent terms the deceased, and the latter offered a fervent prayer in which reference was made to the noble Christian character of the departed.

The long procession of carriages was preceded by thirty members of Pluto Lodge, No 130, Knights of Pythias, to which order deceased had for years be- longed. At the grave, Mr. E. L. Cane read the Pythian funeral services. Rev. J. W. Robins offered prayers and all

that was mortal of one whom all res- pected was laid to rest, Brief reference was made in_ last

week’s Star to the life of deceased. He was born in Prince Edward Island and had reached the age of 60 years. He came to this country in 1873 and for more than twenty yearshad made his home in St. Helena. He leaves a widow and two children, a son, Oswald McDonald, of Fresno County, and a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Neely, of San Diego. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of triends who always admired the many noble qualties of him who has gone to his reward,

Alexander MacArthur, author of a successful study of ‘ife in the Latin quarter of Paris, which brought to the writer both popularity and profit, is also the pupil and biographer of Ru- binstein. The author lived for two years in St. Petersburg, corresponding for the London press and taking part in some thrilling adventures, but the most singular of the writer’s experi- ences happened in Chicago after the novel had been brought out by a pub- lisher of that city. The book had been so successful that the publisher decid- ed to give the author a dinner, to which a dozen of the leading men of letters in the lake city were invited. The guests had assembled when the author was announced.

Through the blue haze of smoke there appeared a handsome young wo- man attired in evening dress.

“We are expecting Mr. MacArthur,” said the host, “Mr. Alexander Mac- Arthur, the novelist.”

“So I understand,” returned the un- expected guest. “I am Alexander Mac- Arthur.”

“You?” gasped the publisher.

“Yes. Didn’t you know? I am Lil- lian MacArthur, at your service. I have been writing over the name of Alexander ever since I left my home in Dublin.”
