referendum. She adds, ‘‘I would like people to take a stand one way or another on this issue because the president of the Student Union is a paid, elected position and the person holding that position must be accountable to the student body.”’

The choice is essentially ours. From time to time issues on this campus become emotion-filled and charged with energy. The combined voice of students is encouraging and can change things. If one feels strongly one way or another, a vote in the upcoming referendum will add support to that particular view. Once again, the choice is ours.

X-Press Hosts Weekend Bash

From October 2nd to 4th, X-Press held the first regional university newspaper conference of the year. Student journalists from St.F.X., Acadia, Dalhousie, King’s College, University College of Cape Breton, Memorial, and Sir Wilfred Grenfill University learned the finer points of journalism, acquainted themselves with the Canadian University Press, the organization the papers belong to, and above all, partied.

A big thanks to Mark MacLane for letting us hang at the Lounge. For some reason, some of the people called that fine establishment the ‘‘Black’’ Panther Lounge. Go figure.

Anyway, they were impressed with the Charlottetown nightlife. One guy from St.F.X. said that the Playhouse atmosphere reminded him of the club atmosphere in Halifax.

Another big thanks goes to Wendy Nicholson, the hostess of our Saturday bash. Great food, Wendy! The most interesting part of that evening was when the men and women separated and discussed women’s issues. When we gathered after the meetings, we came to the general conclusion that guys feel they understand women’s issues and have a tendency to interrupt their women friends to announce this fact.

Last, but not least, X-Press owes a gigantic thank-you to the guest speakers who showed us how to improve our newspa- pers. May this information be used to the best of our ability, and mega-excellent newspapers are the result.

Surprisingly, the universities appreciated our Island hospi- tality. The X-Press did not know if this could be pulled off. Thank God, the conference was a success, everyone hada good time, and Sean McQuaid is not dead -- he put this shindig together.
