Mr. and Mrs. Walsh left Rome and went to Paris and were oblig- ed to wait some time for a. boat. They finally got one from Bor- deaux as all other ports were closed. They had a large number of iléravlgors from the Athenia. on

Tells of Experiences

One woman, who had been on the Athenia with three small children told her own experience in the disaster. she sa‘d had it not been for a retired American sea captain who was with them in their life boat they might all have been drowned.

They were all at dinner about '1 p. m. when the torpedo struck the boat amidships. going ri ht through the dining room, takng part of a stairway away. It was only about 20 to 30 minutes after the torpedo strurl: that the ship went down. How the llfelboals were launched and so many people saved was nothing short of a mir- acle. The children did not knolw just cxactl what had happened and did w at they were told, One

little boy thought he had better bring his flashlight, which proved a great help. Thcir boat was over- loaded but the retired captain took charge and by his calmness and ability to keep the boat afloat brought confidence and courage to the passengers. The captain was very sparing with the rockets with which the lifeboat was equipped; again and again the men and wo- men would implore him to send up another rocket, but he told them to fire them all at once or at two frequent intervals would be waste. After they had been in the open sea for five hours they had one rocket left and that was 99$ off, fortunately a Swedish ship was near and saw it and came to their rescue. and the horrors of the night were over for those plucky peop e.

The steamer that brought the Walslfs to New York was crowd- ed. cots were in the swimming pools, children's nursery and gym- nasium. Everyone was thankfu when they set foot on American soil. Mrs. Walsh lost her trunk some where ln France but. she said that was a small matter compar- ed with the experiences of some of the passengers; and althou h she had purchased some lovey things which were in the trunk she felt she should not grumble or complain. but be thankful that she was home again-S.

Shaw, Chief Supt, of Education, ventured the opinion that the peo- ple of Savage Harbour would have gained a great deal of satisfaction from the improvements even if they had not been fortunate enough to win the cup. The Baptist congregation of Knrutsford and Springfield cele- brated the 64th anniversary of the founding of the Baptist Church at Knutslford on Biulday. 1n spite of the rain there was s. verty large attendance. Rev. Dr. Goes of Summerside was the guest speaker at. the afternoon service and gave an inspiring . Rev. A. Roy MacNaught of San Salvadore de- livered the address in the even- ing, Rev. C_ S. Young, former pas- tor of Knutsford Church, now of Kentswlck, N. B., spoke Sunday evening and also on Monday. Rev. . B. Wilson of Sunlmerside was ghe chief speaker Monday even- ing. A conference was held Mon- day afternoon when Rev. Mr. Young gave the address. Rev. J. C. Duncan. pastor of the Church gave a brief outline of the his- mry the church. Knuhford Baptist Church was

Willie-tn Dobson. a pioneer Baptist Missionary, who founded several Baptist con??- gations in the western part of the Island, was no doubt lilstrumental in bringing the Knutsford Church in-to being. The little congrega- tion of nille Baptists at Cape Wolf was the foundation of the church in that district. Rev. F, Kldson, another pioneer and Rev. M. P. Freeman helped in establishing the Baptist Church in the west. Rev. Josiah Webb was one of the earlier ministers at the Springfield Church.

Mr. .7. W. Boulter stresed the need for continuation of the wond- eriul progress made and stated that there had been a marvellous change in the appsarance of the school and grounds since the school had en- tered competlticn for the cup.

He spoke of the great amount of hard work and planning necessary in an undertaking of this kind but added that it was certainly worth the trouble in the end.

He told the pupils that no mat- ter what profession they choose to follow they must expect hard work and admonished them to do the best and the effort they put into any work would be tile worthwhile thing in the long run.

ful education for the public in that it taught them to be tidy and this virtue would likely be brought into their home life.
