Ite appear- ance is healthy aed encouraging, while its articles, stories and iliu-irations are equal to any 25-ceot magazipe in the world. The November nunber contains the first in- stalment of a new story hy Joanaa M Wood ? the famous Canadian who has written “the Untempered Wind” and ‘‘Judith Moore.”

Wordsworth on Women.

Wordsworth indulges not infrequently in caustic remarks on women who write, toward whom he always retained a root- ed objection. Itis said that after Miss Martineau took up her residence in his neighborhood this abhorrence to author- esses sometimes took such active expres- sion that the deaf lady was frequently obliged to see what she could not hear and perforce to recognize that her pres- ence was unwelco:ne at Rydal Mount. She herself, | owever, makes no mention of anything uf the kind when alluding to the Wordsworths and her intercourse with them.

On one occasion, after unsparingly condemning a work by Miss Sedgwiek, he concludes his criticism thus: “Such productions add to my dislike of literary ladies—indeed make me almost detest the name.” And further on again I find the rather sweeping announcement that “blue stockingism is sadly at enmity with true refinement of mind.” This last is said in reference to Sara Cole- ridge, whom he rather pettishly accuses of monopolizing Mr. Quillinan’s atten- tion on one occasion during the time of
