Prevent Poisonliig

It always pays to read the label on my propai'ation which is be- ing used. Numerous losses are re- corded each year among various :lssses of livestock, chiefly due in carelessness on the part of the owners. Poisoiiings observed are the ones of the arsenical type. mesa poisonings are, generally brought about by allowing live- stock access to killed potato tops, and in few instances earlier in the season, when arsenlcal dusts or gprays such as Paris Green, etc.. have been used to kill insects.

These losses can be prevented by adhering to commonsense rules such as reading the labels and loilowlng yhe manufacturer's in- structions.

Injuries In Winter Quarters

The coming of cold weather brings more chance for injury to livestock as they are brought into the confines of winter quarters.

Horn wounds, bruises, cuts and Icratches from nails, barb wire. ind other sharp objects are a few at the common injuries.

The following precautions are recommended for injured animals:

, Cooking With Air

Air is a poor conductor of heat Air cooling is therefore an inef- ficient method. Bacteria grow ra- pidly in warm milk. If a 10 gal- lon can full of milk at 95 degrees F. is placed in a refrigerator, in which the air is maintained -at 40 degrees F., several hours are rs- quired to reduce the temperature of miiitl 15 to zodegrees. Absorption of -Odors. Milk ab- sorbs odors readily. Keep the milk away from the odors of gasoline. unclean barns, must cel- lars, and strong-flavored fruits and vegetables. 8 rong-flavored feed should be fed fter milking.

Cover Cans. Cover cooled cans of milk with clean lids in order to keep out dust and insects and to avoid absorption of odors. The lids should be left on the cans when milk is being cooled in cold water tanks. .

Poultry Hints

The poultryman who sells the ex- tra pullets rather than overcrowds the laying house will be money a- head.

There is a definite relationship between the floor spmc provided and the potential egg production of hens. From 3 to 4 sq. ft. of floor space should be allowed for each bird in the well equipped poultry house.

At least 6 in. of feeding space per hen is necessary if they are to get all the feed they ned.

The well equipped poultry house should contain at least one nest for each five hens.

About 5 to it gal. of water are needed each day for 100 hens, and it will pay to put out fresh water at least twice per day.

It's the taking care of little item.- in poultry management that helps keep egg production up during the season when egg prices are high- est-this extra production may be the difference between financial success or failure for the poultry- man.

Raise Dog With sheep

In sheep-raising sections of the countryf dog-owners and sheep- herders can mutually benefit from co-operation on problems growing out of keeping these two types of domestic animals.

One of the best ways of prevent- ing trouble and consequent ill- feeling, is for those who have dogs. also to keep a few sheep and for sheep-owners themselves to keep a dog or two.

Dogs brought up with sheep are not likely to molest them. A good plan, therefore, is to have a puppy live and grow up with some young lambs. As the.pup and sheep get older together, they will become more friendly, and the dog can eventually become an excellent guardian for the herd against strange, molesting dogs.

Aoetonemla

Acetoncmia is well known in all cattle raising areas. It has been estimated to involve 15 to 40 per cent of the cows in a given area. It is no respector of breed, but is more prevalent in producing cows, because of the demands made by the developing fetus and by milk production. A recently freshened cow, suffering from the condition, will shrink in production by fifty per cent or more and loose flesh down to the point of marked em- aclation. i .

Many of the factors which lead to the onset of this condition are often overlooked. such as proper handling and fertilization of the soil, feeding a balance ration and careful observation of each in- dlvldual cow. The trace elements are required in very small amounts in the animals body but a decrease or lack of one or more in the cows ration will produce drastic and far reaching effects.

Numerous preventative measures and various treatments have been used by as many different individ- uals with varying degrees of suc- cess and failure. The standard form of treatment has been the administration of a sugar prepar- ation ln ll. suitable form for intra- venous administration. The addlt-, ion to the ration, of blackstrap molasses is of little value in treat- ment. This l.s chiefly due to the fact that absorption is not rapid enough to overcome the condit- ion. However, it may be of some value as a preventative fed over long periods of time.

Early attention should be given to cows showing signs of ace- tonemia. one must remember that there are several forms of this

The 4-H Club Program of the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture has been very suc- cessful this year. The number of club: has been increased over last year. and in the various com- petitions the club members have done very well. -

In connection with the Rural Youth Program at the Maritime Winter Fair. two Island teams tied for first place and of the twelve members eight of them won prize money, having placed either first. second or third in different judging classes.

Of the teams which competed at Toronto our team from Mill- cove, representing the Dairy Pro- ject, placed 2nd. and our Garden Team from Traccdle placed 4th This year it is expected that our Youth Program will grow. be- come better and cover I wider scope of Agricultural projects. No doubt there are many com- munities over the Island which are interested in the 4-H pro- gram, but perhaps they do not know how to get the information about organizing. If they write to the Department of Agriculture, Box 0, Charlottetown. we will be only too pleased to give them all information they desire on club work. . There are projects in Dairy and Beef Calf Clubs, Poultry Clubs, Grain, Garden, Clothing and Food clubs.

Ten Mile House W. I. Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of Ton Mile House Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs.

Waller Mullen on' Wednesday evening, November 12, with seven members and one visitor present. The president opened the meeting by all singing the Ode followed by the "Creed".

The minutes of previous annual and monthly meetings were read. approved and signed. The roll call was answered by members paying their annual membership fees. It was moved and seconded that the articles needed be purchased for the school. A guessing contest which realized the sum of 53-40 was held.

The president then gave a re- port oi the year": activities and thanked the members for their co-operation during the year. The secretary then gave the financial report for the year.
