OTTAWA (CUP) -- Mischievous monkeys preaching sober sex are at the root of acontroversy at Carleton University.

Shirts with pictures of monkeys bearing the slogan ‘*See no evil, Hearno evil, Spread no evil, Sober sex, Whataconcept,’’ are stereotyping people with HIV, says a Carleton AIDS awareness week co-ordinator. ‘*(The t-shirts) are offensive because they insinuate that these people are evil and are intentionally trying to spread the virus,’’ said Ali Biggs.

‘They blew it on this one,’’ she said. The shirts contribute to a climate of fear because they are nega- tive and unclear, she added.

The message on the shirts can be interpreted a number of different ways, Biggs said. And they encourage discrimination against people who are HIV-positive, she said. HIV is the virus linked to AIDS.

Carleton’s alcohol awareness group, PARTY, bought the shirts from the international group BACCHUS, . which encourages moderate alcohol use.

Biggs said she was upset PARTY did not develop an upbeat and positive slogan.

PARTY leader Diana Mills said there is nothing wrong with the shirts, and she is surprised by the reaction to them.

AIDS Committee of Ottawa member Nick Boulieris said the slogan puts the onus on HIV-positive people to protect others, while safer sex is everyone ’sre- sponsibility.

“*One of the reasons we encourage people who are HIV-positive to have safe sex is because they are more vulnerable to other infections when they are HIV -positive,’’ Boulieris said.

‘*People who are HIV-negative pose more of a risk to people who are HIV-positive than vice versa.”’ ) He said the committee may file a compliant with Carleton’s student council.

‘*Hopefully, in the future, people will be contacted before printing something like this, like people from the education department of the AIDS Committee of Ottawa,’’ he added.
