-Rev. Keith Hobson, minister of the Summerslde " , ' Church, ii.-.s guest speaker at the regular monthly meeting of the Sum- mcrslde Home and school As- soclation held last evening in the school library.

"The influences undermining education." was the theme of Rev. Mr. I-Iobson's address in which he stressed that education does not start or stop in school. He raid the emotional appeal of the written word was one of be great und example commercial copy that is worded to appeal and excite the emotions. He mentioned the word "new" that is used often without meaning tolconfuse in describing commercial products. i

Mr. I-Iobson also spoke briefly an the art of graceful living and its effects on the younger gener- ntion principally. He dwelt on charity, particularly those welfare organizations who hold bingoes as money raising projects. He said these bingoes squeeze money out of individuals while they are hav- ing a good time with the prospect of receiving a prize as I reward for their contribution.

The guest speaker said comic books always provide controversy. but he stated it is not the good or bad comic books which are of vital concern. but the reading habits of the children which are completely ruined by seeing pict- ures accompanied by a few words.,

The speaker was thanked by Mr.i A .H. Hubley on behalf of the gathering.

The accuseu is charged with inciting Patrick Leonard Jones of Roseville. a nephew. to com- mitting arson by burning the home of Stella Burns of Rose- vllle in December. 1953. This residence is commonly known as the house of Margaret C. Rlx. who is deceased.

Mrs. Alma Myers of Duvar. formerly of Roseville was the first witness for the crown. who said she was residing at the home of Carrie Gallant in De- cember. 1953, which is located only a short distance from the place.” Carrie Gallant. she said. was living in the United

She said Patrick Leonard Jones. a nephew of the accused, came to her residence often and stated she heard Edward Jones say to him on more than one occasion "to clean her out. set a match to it and let her go." She stated that he was referriilg to the Rix house. which was owned at that time by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burns. She explained that both parties were drinking when these conversations took place and al- so that there was mention of stealing from the Rix house by both parties. Mrs. Myers stated that she knew articles were tak- en from the ”Rix place" and were brought to her residence by Leonard Jones and his brother Bernie. These items consisted of bed-clothing. an axe and an au- ger. she said. and added that the bed-clothing was used by herself. Finally she said she heard Edward tell Leonard two or pnssibly three times ”to burn the Rix place."

On cross examination by de- tense counsil W. Chester S. Mac- Donald. Mrs. Myers. who is the mother of five children. said that Leonard visited her home often and sometimes stayed over night. She stated that Leonard's brother. Bernie. was also at the home nearly every evening when the conversations concerning the burning of the ”R'lx place" were held between Edward and Leon- ard and that Edward always in- stigated these conversations. The witness said she had discussed the reason for burning the house with Edward and in answer to a question as to the reason. she said Edward held a grudge a- gainst Roy Burns and swore he'd get even with him. The grudge, she said. was the result of Burns apprehension by the police after buying liquor from Edward. She said Burns told the R.C.M.P. he got the liquor from Edward Jones and consequently

Edward Jones. asked him to burn the "Rix place" several times while under the influence of liquor. He said that his uncle even offered him 350 to burn it. but said Ill never told him the reason for wanting it. burned. The witness said he knew about the grudge from his conversations with Mrs. Myers. He admitted taking bed- clothes, an axe and an anger from the ”Rix place" the eve- ning of the fire. which he said was December 10. 1953.
