Lonpon, Sept. 27.—The elections to fill the vacancy in the House of Commons for the Sleaford division of Lincolnshire, caused by the acceptance of Rt. Hon Henry Chaplin of the office of ininister of agriculture, resulted in the return of Mr Chaplin, who received 4,386 votes. Mr. Francis (Giadstonian) received 3,078 votes. in the last election Mr. Chaplin was re- turned without opposition.

Fat River, 27.—Five persons were drowned in South Watuppa pond this afternoon by the capsiz:ng of a row boat. The party had been across the pond after grapes. One of the number is said to have been intuxicated. An empty whiskey boitle was found in the boat. The water was less than five feet deep.

He had proceeded pretty well, when the waiter discovered his mistake. He hastened to where Mr. Berrie was seated and explained how mat- ters stood, but the explanation came too late, as nearly all the toothsume viands that the bishop had ordered had disappear- ed down the Methodist clergyman’s throat.
