Loxpox, July 9.—The correspondents at Shanghai, who are still the clearing house for the Chinese news, says that a com biued force of Russians and Japanese have left Tien Tsin, foliowing the railway as far as Lang Fau, and have thence swept swiftly to the west, attacking the Chinese 18 miles north of Tien Tsin aod killing 1,000 of them,

The Shanghai correspondent of the Standard says: “Reports from Tien Tesin from Chinese sources say that a great

battle has taken place in which the Chinese lost heavily.

The allies at Tien Tsin are short of pro- visions and suffer considerably from sniping.

Artillery Practice

The 4th Regt. C. A. held their big guu competition this year at Tea Hi!] on Sat- urday last. Four companies competed and did excellent work. The battery from which the guns were fired was at the summit of Tea Hilland the targets were placed about 300 yards from the beach off Squaw Point, snd about 3,000 yards from the battery. Lieut..~Col, Moore, D, O. C., acted as umpire,and Lieut. Mae- dougall was range officer. The target represented 45 men in line kneeling and the way in which the enemy was knocked out by the different companies was a very pleasing sight. The Movtague Company which made such an excellent anpearance in camp, itis eaid,did the best shooting. The 4th Regiment never appeared in bet- ter form than this year, and we congratu~ late Col. Longworth and his gallant officers on the fioe showing the regiment made.

WOOLLEN MILLS DESTROYED

By Fire Today—Not aCent of In- surance. The Woollen Mills at Spring Park

fore nooa fire was discovered near the engine house. It is thougit to have started in the waste houss nearthe boiler. The mills were entirely of wood, andin a very short while the structures were a roarting furnace. The firemen quickly arrived, but the buildings were beyond hope of re- covery. Several streams of water were played on the flames and the burning woodwork. Now nothing is to be seen save the chimney and tbe charred re- mains of the mille. Nothing wassaved. The cloth and the machinery are a total loss. About forty persons were employed in the mills. There is no insurance.

Sipido’s Sentence,

Bravasexs, July 6.—The Assizes Court yesterday returned a verdict of guilty of attempt to kill the Prince of Wales against Jean Baptiste Sipido,who fired at the Prince, April 4,as the train bearing His Royal Highness was leaving the Northern Station in this city for Copenhagen. The court considered that Sipido acted without dieceroment and sentenced him to a refor- matory until he shall have attained his misjority.

In the latest lista of casualties there is evidence of this. The attack on the smal] British force at Honingspruit, on June 23, entailed the death of Major H.T. de C. Hobbs, of the 2nd West York-, who was taken prisoner owiog to staying be hind to assist a wounded mao at Willow Grange, in Natal, on November 23. Sec- ond-Lieut. H H Smith, reported severely wounded in the same fight, belongs to the lst Gloucesters, and was taken prisoner at Nicholsoo’s Nek.
